Charged with leading the Infrastructure SQL Services team and developing the team into an industry standard SQL support group my asks included planning for hardware needs, architecting alerting and monitoring solutions, managing vendor resources, development of the central alerting and monitoring repository and providing daily SQL DBA support. Internal clients ranged from PeopleSoft Financials and HR to Expedia’s Data Management Group which included the corporate data warehouse. The SQL platform support and administration of 30+ SQL servers housing close to 5TB of data across 350+ databases was the primary focus. In addition, responsible for consultation to development teams on performance and optimization related issues, often providing specific instructions to resolve issues within their architectures.

Designed, architected and built the first version of Expedia’s Data Warehouse controller software. Utilizing an asynchronous, distributed architecture that is almost 100% meta-data driven and dynamic, the Data Warehouse controller software is comprised of about 10,000 lines of VBScript and COM code. It exploits a wide range of Microsoft technologies including SQL 2000, Windows Scripting Host, Windows Management Instrumentation, ADO and TSQL to control over 600 processes used to extract, validate, import, transform, consolidate and publish Merchant Hotel transaction information. In total, the Data Warehouse System consists of hundreds of stored procedures, PERL scripts, VB scripts, and COM code comprising over 20,000 lines of code.

As part of the DSS team, responsibilities included writing complex queries and reports against the DSS databases. Additionally, I acted as a consultant to performance tuning and optimization of indexes and hardware builds. As such, I was considered a development resource and worked with VSS and collaborated with other team members to accomplish releases on schedule and to spec. The architecture of the DSS systems was very complex and required a wide range of knowledge of systems and development procedures. Part of my job also required that I work with the PMs on designing reports that will give Expedia executives the data that they need to make business decisions.
