I am at that age. It is not unusual that upon encountering an 'old' person, they sometimes turn out to be younger than me. I don’t feel old. But maybe I have stumbled onto some wisdom. If perchance you are open to advice, my top pick is, ‘You will never regret being kind.’ If you want a second, I would add, ‘Strive to be calm.’ People are complex. Nobody is all good or all bad. If you are a hiring manager, I advise you to only hire outstanding employees. Never settle. If in doubt, keep looking. It is better to overlook a good candidate rather than to hire a liability. By the way, an outstanding employee is conscientious, humble, and empathetic. Build trust. As an employee, seek employment with an organization that shares your values. Every situation in life has problems. Find a problem set that appeals to you. [Of course, we tend to make our problems needlessly worse (Jevons paradox); when it comes to the important things in life, an attitude of "enough" serves us better than the pursuit of "more".] Don’t take your family and friends for granted. Be generous with praise and give feedback if they are being counter-productive (don’t forget the ‘kind’ rule above). Actually, let’s add employees, bosses, colleagues, and clients to this category. Relationships matter. Take care of yourself. Keep learning. Spend most of your time in the present. Make decisions that will stand the test of time. Be wary of dogma. And it is my opinion, that opinions are cheap. ;-) ------------------ P.S. I am currently dabbling in volunteer work, trying to find a good fit. ----------------P.P.S. I have a hobby that is unlikely to be found on any list of hobbies; I take verbatim notes of most books I read, and then share most of those on LinkedIn. Be mindful that these notes are my take-aways at the time of reading, and do not necessarily reflect the authors' intentions.

Acting Director - Applied ResearchAlgonquin College Of Applied Arts And Technology Sep 2021 - May 2022Ottawa, Ontario, CanadaMy mandate was to integrate the Applied Research Office (ARO) into the broader academic area. I consulted with interested parties (mostly internal) and assisted in developing a strategic plan for Applied Research at Algonquin College. So what were my findings and recommendations? At the risk of over-simplifying (contact me if you want more details): 1. Stand alone project (SAP) is not a natural activity for a college, hence the need for an ARO. 2. In class project (ICP) and scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) are the purview of the academic program areas, not the ARO. 3. The ARO should facilitate ICP and SoTL (mostly with communities of practice, CoP). This is to build credibility with the academic program areas, and to nurture the skills required for a broad culture of applied research. -
Chair - Mechanical And Transportation TechnologyAlgonquin College Apr 2014 - Oct 2021OttawaAs the academic chair for the Mechanical and Transportation Technology department, my primary world view is that of an educator, which in turn is supported by my administrative and engineering backgrounds. I understand the nuances of working with a unionized workforce and three collective agreements. As well, I place a high priority upon succession planning. I am proud to say that I am passionate about teaching and learning. So, how does that translate into my daily priorities? Firstly, I want people to love coming to work in this department. People are social animals and I believe that work is best experienced within a social context. The challenge is that teaching tends to be a solitary or autonomous occupation. My approach is to actively foster a learner/leader culture. Let’s see what transpires. Secondly, it is important to me that we create significant learning experiences for our students which I believe have the short term benefits of increased student engagement. In the longer term this leads to enhanced employability of our graduates (effectiveness) and improved retention (efficiency). There is an appetite for change in the department and we are experimenting with our teaching and learning methodologies; curriculum development activities abound. Finally, I am determined to obtain financial sustainability for this department. We are actively exploring and pursuing options for increased revenue. Stay tuned for results. So there you have it … we are going to achieve great things … have fun doing it … while making money at the same time. Who said anything about modest goals? -
