I am at that age. It is not unusual that upon encountering an 'old' person, they sometimes turn out to be younger than me. I don’t feel old. But maybe I have stumbled onto some wisdom. If perchance you are open to advice, my top pick is, ‘You will never regret being kind.’ If you want a second, I would add, ‘Strive to be calm.’ People are complex. Nobody is all good or all bad. If you are a hiring manager, I advise you to only hire outstanding employees. Never settle. If in doubt, keep looking. It is better to overlook a good candidate rather than to hire a liability. By the way, an outstanding employee is conscientious, humble, and empathetic. Build trust. As an employee, seek employment with an organization that shares your values. Every situation in life has problems. Find a problem set that appeals to you. [Of course, we tend to make our problems needlessly worse (Jevons paradox); when it comes to the important things in life, an attitude of "enough" serves us better than the pursuit of "more".] Don’t take your family and friends for granted. Be generous with praise and give feedback if they are being counter-productive (don’t forget the ‘kind’ rule above). Actually, let’s add employees, bosses, colleagues, and clients to this category. Relationships matter. Take care of yourself. Keep learning. Spend most of your time in the present. Make decisions that will stand the test of time. Be wary of dogma.
