I am currently working as a Science and Mathematics teacher - committed to developing students interest in these subjects and supporting them ,at all levels, to achieve their potential.I have maintained strong interest in metallurgy all of my working life, particularly in Iron and Steelmaking but also in physical metallurgy and failure analysis. This had enabled me to make substantial contributions to processing improvements in the primary end of the Newcastle steelworks and occasional consulting.Leading successful small groups in a Total Quality Control environment has been pivotal in achieving process improvement. Participation in the development of operational practices by front line plant operators and key stakeholders ensured commitment and successful outcomes. Examples include :-development of practices for temperature, chemistry control in secondary Steelmaking- procedures across the plant to ensure segregation of high sulphur scrap- resulted in a reduction of out of specification steel produced due to sulphur and reduction in alloy consumption on high sulphur grades.-practices to improve steel cleanliness at the Secondary Steelmaking Plant and Bloom Caster- procedural changes and introduction of equipment to improve billet straightness in the Bloom Mill. This project was awarded a prize for being the best small group activity in Integrated Steel.I am currently completing a Failure Analysis course with The American Society of Metals. I have a small scale metallurgical laboratory at home capable of carrying out-sample preparation - sectioning, grinding and polishing- optical microscopy- hardness testing- impact testing Recently awarded grade of Fellow in The Institute of Materials Mining and Minerals (London)Current interests also include developing skills in lost wax and sand casting of non ferrous metalsI enjoy surfing at our beautiful town beaches
