As lead rolling stock engineer for the Northwest Rapid Transit – Systems joint venture, my role related to procuring new, fully-automated metro trains and auxiliary rolling stock for the Sydney Metro Northwest project.I joined the project at the beginning of the preliminary design phase and brought value to the design, construction, testing, commissioning, statutory approvals and handover of the metro trains to the operator (Metro Trains Sydney). My achievements included-Design certification for mechanical rolling stock design packages: mechanical design submissions for carbody structure, gangway, coupler systems, bogie and vehicle dynamics, saloon interior and acoustics. This included design reviews; client design presentations; and successfully negotiating certification of these designs.Delivering the first automated metro rolling stock fleet in Australia: planning and implementing construction surveillance; aiding variations in the Accreditation of the rail operator; presenting to ONRSR; attaining approval from the rail operator; and site management and safety.Supporting a successful testing and commissioning program: reviewing test procedures and reports; attaining certification of test documentation; witnessing supplier testing; preparing safety assurance documentation; planning testing and commissioning works in a complex operating environment; leading testing activities; managing suppliers and consultants; developing framework for rolling stock safety during T&C; and managing rolling stock handover to the operator.Delivering battery-electric hybrid locomotives: specifying two new battery-electric hybrid locomotives – the first in Australia; attaining rail operator approvals; and overseeing on-site testing and commissioning management.
Mechanical Engineer - Rollingstock Analysis And Improvement
As a member of the Rollingstock Maintenance (formerly Locomotive Maintenance) Analysis & Improvement Team based in Port Hedland, I was responsible for mechanical aspects of BHP Billiton's locomotive fleet, including asset management and asset strategy development. In particular, I led projects to improve the reliability of BHP Billiton's locomotive fleet. Furthermore, I provided technical support to maintenance execution teams and lead root cause investigations. My success in this role was based on demonstrated skills in written and verbal communication, stakeholder consultation, reliability analysis and reporting, and the lean six sigma approach. My main achievements included:• Leading the implementation of a new, condition-based locomotive wheel maintenance strategy. I was responsible for coordinating a team to engage stakeholders and develop aspects of the strategy, preparing the asset management plan, preparing a technical manual for locomotive wheel maintenance requirements, preparing a safety case and risk register, coordinating the change management process, coordinating development of the work management approach in 1SAP and engaging the department to communicate and initiate the strategy.• Championing and leading an initiative to accurately and reliably measure the on-board fuel burn of our locomotive fleet. This provided a baseline for improvements in fuel consumption. The project successfully achieved these initial aims and directly resulted in an expanded program of fuel consumption measurement and reduction measures.• Successfully leading a project to validate the replacement of air filters at six month intervals in Pilbara conditions, eliminating the need for a three month service. • Identifying, developing and implementing improvements to maintenance strategies for various locomotive subsystems including traction motors and brake systems.
