I joined the Agricultural Research Council-Onderstepoort Veterinary (Research) Institute (ARC-OVI) in 1994 in Pretoria as a PhD Research Fellow. In 1997 I was appointed as a permanent employee, as a Researcher. I completed my PhD degree in Genetics at the University of Pretoria in 2005, after obtaining various degrees in Microbiology and Biochemistry at the University of Cape Town. In 2000, I was promoted to Senior Researcher and in 2010 to Project Manager for the "Viral-vectored Vaccines" unit in the Vaccines and Diagnostics Development programme at the OVI. I have managed projects involving the use of poxviruses, mainly lumpy skin disease virus, as vectors for recombinant vaccines against livestock diseases of veterinary importance, and projects on new molecular-based diagnostic test development, as well as veterinary epidemiology. I have been involved in post-graduate student supervision at various levels and in 2005 I was appointed as an Extraordinary Lecturer in the Department of Veterinary Tropical Diseases at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Science Faculty of the University of Pretoria.I have been co- and lead-Investigator on a number of locally- and internationally-funded research projects, and am a World Organisation for Animal Health Reference Laboratory expert on lumpy skin disease, and am recognised as an expert on Rift Valley fever.I am well-published, am co-holder of a patent on LSDV as a vaccine delivery vehicle, have been active in developing farmer education and provided veterinary professionals with training on veterinary disease prevention and control. In October 2022, I relocated from Pretoria to Cape Town for personal and professional reasons, while continuing to contribute to animal health in one form or other and helping students with a passion for Science.
