My name is David Wallace-Hare. I am an environmental researcher and communicator with a multidisciplinary background in Islamic finance, sustainability, and third-sector governance. My work during my MSc in Charity Marketing and Fundraising from Bayes Business School, City, University of London focuses on applying Islamic finance principles to combat greenwashing in the marketing of tree-planting organisations in the UK’s third sector. My academic journey also includes degrees in Classical Environmental and Religious History (PhD, University of Toronto), which have shaped my understanding of the intersection between human history, environmental stewardship, and ethical governance.Classical and religious studies have given me a deep appreciation for the long-standing connections between religious principles and environmental care, which complements my work in Islamic finance. In ancient civilisations, religious and cultural practices often guided sustainable living and environmental responsibility, much like the principles found in Islamic finance today. This unique perspective helps me approach modern environmental challenges through a historical and ethical lens, recognising that sustainability is not a new concept, but one that has evolved through time and across cultures.I hold a Certificate in Islamic Banking from the Institute of Islamic Banking and Insurance (IIBI) and completed a Professional Certificate in Islamic Finance (Shari’ah) from the International Centre for Education in Islamic Finance (INCEIF). I am pursuing a Certificate of Proficiency in Shari’ah Standards (CPSS) from the Accounting and Auditing Organization for Islamic Financial Institutions (AAOIFI) with the goal of later pursuing the Certified Shari'ah Expert (CSE) designation to lead in the optimisation of Islamic financial products and services for the nonprofit sector.
