Professional Transport Analyst. Member of UKTram and one of the two UK representatives on the Urban Tram Forum, which meets each year to exchange knowledge and experience between tram professionals across most of Europe. The Forum grew out of a European tram safety project, COST (European Cooperation in Science and Technology) Action TU1103 on the operation and safety of tramways in interaction with public space, after the final report of the project was published in 2015. David Walmsley is a Council member and member of the Publications and Campaigns Groups of the Light Rail Transit Association (LRTA). The LRTA is the world's leading organisation campaigning for better public transport through light rail, tramway and metro systems in our towns and cities. It also supports the revitalisation of suburban and rural transport through the application of light rail.

UKTram is the cross-industry body representing the tramway industry in the UK. It is recognised as the voice of the industry by the Department for Transport and the Office of Rail and Road.David Walmsley is an Individual Member of UKTram and a member of the Centre of Excellence Group of UKTram

David Walmsley, BSc., Ph.D., CMILT, MCIHT, worked as the Fixed Track Executive at the Confederation of Passenger Transport, the trade association for the bus, coach and light rail industry. At CPT he looked after the interests of light rail and tramway operators in discussions with Government bodies on safety regulations, accessibility and economic matters. He also dealt with bus-rail ticketing initiatives and smart card issues.He is a former Director of UKTram.

David Walmsley joined the Transport Research Laboratory in 1968, working mainly in the field of public transport. His studies include modelling of inter-city transport, the impact of the Tyne and Wear Metro and Glasgow rail improvements, the use of minibuses, and the effects of bus deregulation. He conducted a study of rapid transit and light rail in Europe and North America, covering the way they are financed and their effects on patronage, urban development and safety. In the early 1990s he studied the effect of rural road geometry on accidents, continuing this work as a consultant after retiring from TRL in 1995.He has also lectured to adult classes on computing and statistics.
