Until I retired I worked at the Confederation of Passenger Transport (CPT), a trade association for the bus, coach and light rail industry. I was the Fixed Track Executive, looking after the interests of the light rail operators, dealing with the DfT, ORR and RAIB on the operators' behalf. I was Secretary of the Light Rail Operators' Group, whose meetings rotated around all the members, so I am familiar with most of the UK systems. I am one of the two UK reps on the Urban Tram Forum, which meets each year to exchange knowledge and experience between tram professionals across most of Europe, which grew out of a European tram safety project (COST Action TU1103) after the final report of the project was published in 2015. Before I joined CPT I worked at the Transport Research Laboratory on a variety of projects mostly in the field of public transport, including the impact of the Tyne and Wear Metro and Glasgow rail improvements, the use of minibuses, the effects of bus deregulation, and studies of rapid transit and light rail in Europe and North America,
