About David Webster

I am a passionate software engineer and researcher in internet and distributed systems, contributing to the disciplines professionally for over 15 years. In addition to research and development in this domain my experience incorporates broader knowledge in the areas of computer aided engineering simulations, design environments, semantic information retrieval, and ontology-based knowledge management.During my research career I have lead and project managed software research and development on industrial collaboration projects delivering dependable software to stakeholders and have contributed to the writing and preparation of several grant proposals in addition to managing budgets. Supporting my research and project management activities I have over 15 years of C, C#, Java, PHP and Ruby programming experience, design (MVC, etc.) and refactoring patterns, in addition to contributing to and creating open-source projects. My development specialism is primarily REST and SOAP Web Services, transitioning from Java/Axis and JSP Web Services to C#/ASP.NET in the past 2-3 years. During my time at the University of Leeds and the University of Hull I have authored over 25 peer-reviewed publications in the fields of Distributed Systems and Internet Computing and have been involved in the organisational committees of international academic conferences.

    Project overview: Under this programme I am responsible for the development of a service-oriented simulation and prototyping environment for creating and evaluating early vehicle concept designs. This capability is derived from the ability to rapidly integrate distributed ad-hoc simulations enabled by a service-oriented architecture.Industrial collaborator: Jaguar Land Rover.Roles: For this project my roles have encompassed system architect, lead researcher-developer, in addition to grant co-writer. I have lead and project managed a team of research assistants under my supervision using the SCRUM methodology, taking advantage of the TRAC issue tracking system. In this project I report to industrial and academic stakeholders on a bi-weekly basis, taking responsibility for deliverables for technical reporting, software delivery, and follow-up activities such as research paper publication to leading academic conferences and journals. As part of the wider programme I represent the team at quarterly steering committee meetings.Technologies used: C#, C, WSDL/SOAP, REST, MPI, Simulink, Enterprise Architect for UML, TORCS driving simulator, SVN, TRAC.

    Project overview: This Technology Strategy Board project addressed the issue of trust in shared digital systems through the provision of a service-oriented provenance collection and analysis system seamlessly linking backend databases with provenance mining services and enhanced the decision making process of both industrial collaborators. This project was envisaged to deliver at TRL4, however, successfully achieved a TRL6 delivery due to the system maturity.Industrial collaborators: Rolls-Royce and Cybula Ltd.Roles: In this project my role was lead programmer for the back-end services for provenance collection in addition to leading development of the creation of meta-models for provenance modelling. Within this project I had responsibility for delivering technical research reports and presented research outputs quarterly to Technology Strategy Board monitoring officer.Technologies used: Java Web Services, WSDL/SOAP, REST, Apache Axis, SQL, OWL (Semantic Web), Protégé, D3.js, JavaScript, Mercurial.

Towards the end of the programme my role transitioned from life-cycle modelling to developing a service-oriented workflow to integrate a Web-based mapping client with a dependable simulation for distributed target sensing and tracking.
