Now retired. Formerly undergraduate teacher in religious studies, chair of departments of religion at Cornell College (1978-2000) and Colorado College (2001-08), publications in American religion and theology. Published book on miracles in world religions (2010) with New York University Press and a companion volume (2017) on the meaning of sacrifice in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, ranging across practices of ritual killing, ascetic self-denial, martyrdom, self-erasure in mystical ecstasy, offerings made in devotion, and references to sacrifice in the rhetoric of war. Retired as Professor Emeritus from Colorado College in 2014, but offering courses in the adult education program in Colorado Springs called PILLAR Institute for Lifelong Learning. I teach courses in Christianity, philosophy of religion, comparative theology, religion in America, religious ethics, and theory and method of religious studies. I served as chair of the Department of Religion from 2001 to 2008 and was named the David and Lucile Packard Professor of Religion for 2009-2012. Next year will be my last of full-time teaching and I approach it with the mixed emotions of profound gratitude to my students and colleagues over 42 years of teaching and excitement about the prospect of extended time for reading, reflection, and writing.

I was eventually dismissed for advocating "new-orthodox" views of biblical revelation--and spent a year selling shoes and teaching part-time at University of California in Santa Barbara (thanks to the hospitality of Jerry Larson). Then I went to Cornell College, a Methodist institution, with more generous views of theology and clear commitment to academic freedom.
