Business is all about relationships and relationships are all about people. Whether I was working the photo counter in a drugstore as a teenager, marketing data monitoring devices as a college student, bringing in a client as a summer associate, negotiating with the Japanese government as a young lawyer, sitting with the King of Swaziland discussing a banking deal (yes, that really happened) or negotiating with Kazakh or Montenegrin government officials over complex privatizations, I have always had a talent for solving complex problems by building relationships with people, in particular across international and cultural lines. This skill (and others) has been central to my professional (and personal) life and can be summarized in a story. I was cycling in Abu Dhabi with a friend one night and he asked me to explain in one sentence what I can do. This is the best time to answer this question because you are suffering and there is no time to use a lot of words, so I said without hesitation “I can be dropped into any situation, in any industry, anywhere in the world and I can find the solutions and common ground to solve the problem.” In today’s globalized world, the ability to find common ground with people from all backgrounds is essential in virtually every business. Whether you are structuring an investment, negotiating a long-term commercial agreement or joint venture, performing due diligence, developing the next AI chatbot or building a hotel... at the base of it all... you will find people.I have translated this skill across many industries and roles, whether it was as a lawyer, business strategist, business developer, member of a corporate board and in some cases, combinations of all of these, working with people is the common denominator and my greatest strength. # Cross Cultural Problem Solver# People Person# Legal/Business/Investment/Strategy# Team Builder/Player# Analytical and Creative# Outstanding Communicator # Business Developer & Networker

Head Of International Legal AffairsRoyal Group Companies Management Feb 2010 - PresentMy work at Squire Patton Boggs for the Royal Group was highly valued at the most senior levels of the organization. This led Royal Group to create a senior role for me to fill a need for counsel on international business and investment. In this role, I have led legal teams on a range of transactions in multiple countries. I have counseled senior members of the business team and have been entrusted to lead business and legal teams on important transactions and to source such transactions. I was appointed to a number of boards of directors, from professional sports teams to medical cannabis companies to hospitality companies in South Africa. Beyond these duties, I have supported several of the internal companies and functions in non-legal roles. I functioned as the head of strategy for an internal startup company, MyWhoosh (a start up virtual cycling app). In this role, I acted as an advisor to the CEO on a range of issues, assisted in the recruitment of the senior team, set the key foundations of the business and developed and executed the company’s first growth strategy. In addition, the Chairman of Royal Group appointed me to a business committee charged with sourcing, analyzing and executing real estate investments in the United States and Europe. But don’t take it from me… my clients and colleagues feel the same way.Senior executive: David takes complex legal situations and regulations and breaks them down to business terms so we can make well informed decisions.Fellow Employee: David’s approach to risk as a lawyer is refreshing… he works to price legal risk so that we on the investment team can determine how it impacts the value of a transaction.External Advisor: David speaks like a businessperson who happens to be a lawyer.Internal Client: Before we close anything, he always wants to know if David signed off on this.

Executive Director, International Growth & Chief Legal OfficerMultiply Group Pjsc May 2022 - Aug 2023Most recently, at the request of the CEO of Multiply Group, I was appointed to Multiply (while retaining elements of my role at Royal Group) for my current role in which I have led international business development, including setting and executing business development strategy, developing budgets, and sourcing and structuring investment opportunities for the company. In addition, I have participated generally in determining which potential investments we should pursue. Notably, I have identified and negotiated a merger between one of our business units and another company that will greatly enhance both businesses. In addition, I have built out the legal function of Multiply, including recruiting an attorney and managing the development of key internal corporate functions, including corporate governance, enterprise risk management and budgets and processes for execution of investments.

PartnerPatton Boggs Llp Aug 2001 - Feb 2010Cleveland, Ohio, UsMy next role at Patton Boggs emerged from the strong ties I had formed and consistently nurtured with corporate leaders while at the Department of Commerce. Patton Boggs was interested in me as I could provide senior associate support in two different departments… public policy work (from my years in government) as well as international and domestic corporate work (from my time at Paul Weiss). The firms’ entrepreneurial spirit and approach fit me well. I was elected to partner only 2 years after arriving. I developed a business strategy to build the firm’s presence and practice in Korea. As part of the execution of that strategy, I brought in the Government of Korea and even persuaded the firm’s then chairman Tom Boggs to join me on several trips to finalize the engagement with them. At the same time, the senior leadership of the firm entrusted me to handle one of the firms’ key clients in Abu Dhabi, the Royal Group, a client relationship that I grew from a low five figure account to one well into the upper six figure range. At the time of my departure, I had built a book of business that was well in excess of 1.5 million USD and growing. In addition to my success on the business side, the firm also recognized my skills as a leader within the firm. I was appointed to the firm’s recruitment committee where I was one of several partners charged with identifying and recruiting junior attorneys for the firm as well as interviewing and evaluating lateral associates and partners, including the proposed business plans. I was also appointed to be lead the firm’s corporate department training program. The curriculum and delivery model that I developed was so successful, the approach was adopted by the entire firm. -
AssociateSchneider, Harrison, Segal & Lewis Sep 2000 - Aug 2001From Paul Weiss, I was recruited to join as a senior associate at Schnader. They sought to expand and grow the firm, in particular internationally and saw my background as one that could be part of the firm’s next generation of international leaders. While this was a short tenure, I was able to grow one of the firm's important clients substantially and build rapport sufficiently with them such that they followed me to Patton Boggs when I left.

AssociatePaul Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison Feb 1996 - Aug 2000Through a series of relationships I had built in the government, I was recruited by partners at Paul Weiss to become an associate in the Washington office. I took the “partner level” skills I had developed in government and built out the associate skills one needs to truly perfect a craft by working across the corporate, litigation, tax and trade departments of the firm. This included work on private equity investments by top tier investment firms, handling international transfer pricing matters for a large Japanese electronics firm and playing a key role in a dumping case brought against a large Japanese electronics company involving supercomputers. By the end of my 3rd year at the firm, I was selected to go to Hong Kong to support the legal team of StarTV and to work on a range of projects including the formation of a joint venture. The client asked me to return to Hong Kong to take a short-term role as acting general counsel for the (sadly short lived) joint venture we had just formed. Perhaps the crowning achievement of my time at Paul Weiss was a pro bono case in which I led the legal team (as part of a team of very talented other professionals) to obtain a pardon from President Clinton for Preston King.

Attorney AdvisorDepartment Of Commerce Aug 1991 - Feb 1996This was my first job after law school and it was a perfect match at the time. Within weeks of joining, through a positive relationship with one of the senior lawyers in the office, I was sitting at the negotiating table with representatives from the Government of Japan negotiating a trade agreement on autos and auto parts. Within months, I had built a strong relationship with the head of several key policy offices responsible for the automotive sector and trade with Japan. I was selected to be the lead attorney for one of the more challenging policy offices (both legally and politically) which was a role I held for several years. The next four years would be a whirlwind of growth and experiences negotiating trade agreements with Japan and Korea on a range of topics, advising senior US government officials on international trade law, traveling the world to first chair negotiations with foreign governments and experiencing the inner workings of government at a high level. Among my achievements in this role, I was the lead lawyer on two major trade agreements on autos and auto part, one with Japan and one with Korea both of which had multi-billion dollar impacts on the automotive industry. I was also the lead lawyer on a number of bilateral textile market access agreements with countries in Eastern Europe.
