While we collaborate on opportunities at our firms, my primary interaction with David happened through our work for the Society for Marketing Professional Services. During my time on the SMPS Indiana board of directors, David—a past president of our chapter—taught me the importance of recruiting great volunteers and empowering them to own initiatives, rather than trying to tackle everything and delegate tasks. His perspective about volunteer work and its ability to teach important management skills in a non-threatening environment has help instill in me confidence and the willingness to take risks for innovation. In addition, I’ve had the pleasure of serving on David’s committee to plan the recent 2010 Heartland Regional Conference as well as presenting alongside him at regional SMPS conferences in St. Louis and Austin. In all of these efforts I’ve witnessed his organization, efficiency in moving initiatives forward and focus on helping people understand and use their strengths. His leadership efforts create a ripple effect that ultimately benefits the industry as a whole as we all continually improve the value that we bring to our firms and the value that our firms bring to our clients."
