Over 20 years I have built and led the Government Affairs and Public Policy teams for 3 major international businesses, operating at the intersection of business strategy, regulation, reputation and communications. I’ve worked directly for several high profile CEOs and boards, and handled politically sensitive M&A activity. I have deep insights into what makes this function operate effectively for complex companies in politically exposed regulated sectors. I have a wide understanding of multiple national, regional and global political institutions, and I have a public profile and relationships across the political and geographic spectrum. I have sector experience in technology, consumer, sport, media, telecoms and financial markets, amongst others. At YouTube I lead the EMEA team dealing with controversial technology and content platform issues which governments and international institutions care deeply about, including disinformation and security, deepfakes and AI, copyright and advertising, media and culture, network access and resilience. We handle sensitive content escalations in ongoing regional conflict zones and during important elections, multiple legislative files governing the regulation of technology platforms, and engage with legislators, government ministers and regulators across the region. At Sky I led the Group policy team for 14 years across multiple geographic markets. During that time, News Corporation twice attempted to wholly acquire Sky, generating huge political controversy and scrutiny. I handled the government and regulatory strategy and engagement on issues of vital importance to the company, including sports rights acquisitions and distribution, news plurality reviews, broadband regulatory reviews, advertising reviews and a host telecoms and audio-visual legislation in the UK and EU. I also led the sustainability and corporate reputation team, overseeing the development of Sky's environmental and youth campaigns. At the London Stock Exchange Group I led government affairs during several hostile takeovers from rival stock exchanges and, as the principle copy writer, edited various bid defence communications including the CEOs speeches, official bid documents and annual reports. I led the lobbying of the UK government to pass legislation that would protect the UK equity markets from foreign regulation in the event of a takeover, as well as lobbying of the EU institutions during passage of numerous wholesale financial markets directives. I held various board positions promoting the City of London as a global financial centre.
