As a pioneer in medical ultrasound imaging he introduced digital signal processing techniques, typical of advanced military radar, forming the foundation of modern systems used worldwide. Recruited by NASA, Dr. Wolf produced the first ultrasonic medical imaging system to operate in Space, became Chief Engineer for the telemedicine system now operational on the International Space Station (ISS), and made groundbreaking contributions to 3-dimensional tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, and associated cancer research applications now broadly utilized commercially and in fundamental research. With 18 US patents, he was named NASA Inventor of the Year, inducted into the Space Technology Hall of Fame, earned the NASA Exceptional Engineering Achievement Medal and the Texas State Bar Patent of the Year. Selected as a U.S. Astronaut in 1990, Dr. Wolf went on to accomplish 4 Spaceflights, 168 days on-orbit, 7 Spacewalks, and assumed a leadership role in construction of the ISS by extravehicular activity (EVA). On-orbit, David conducted 0-gravity research advancing the “state of the art” in Bioreactor technology and extensive medical research coordinating inflight activities of over 25 research institutions, numerous investigators, and responsible for significant national treasure – assuring the critical Space research goals were achieved. Spanning two administrations, Dr. Wolf was called upon as advisor to the US Cabinet, President, and Vice President chairing the Space Policy and International Engagement committee, chartered to assure our countries leadership role in Space. His executive roles include Chief Medical Officer of an AI driven “in silico” drug design company innovating the use of computed quantum mechanical parameters as AI training features. As a USAF commissioned officer he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, became an accomplished Senior Flight Surgeon, and sustained wartime mission ready status as a navigator/weapons systems officer. His over 3500 flight hours flight time are primarily in the F4 Phantom(C, D, and E models), T-38 Talon, and Christen Eagle biplane as a competitor in national level aerobatic competition.
