I am now undertaking a portfolio career of non executive roles having recently retired from National Grid. I chair the Energy Research Partnership and am a commissioner with the National Preparedness Commission.In my 32yrs in National Grid, I occupied senior executive positions on both gas and electricity networks in the UK and US, including leading National Grid Electricity Transmission business for 8 years. I then became the Chief Engineer and Chief Risk Officer for the group, as well as leading a major M&A acquisition. I am a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and a dual-accredited Chartered Engineer with both the IET and IGEM. I have an honorary doctorate from the University of Birmingham and am a member of the Institute of Asset Management.

Providing executive leadership in the strategic management of our electricity transmission assets in the US, developing regulatory relations and creating value whilst mitigating asset risk.

Leading a centralised planning function enabling all work to be undertaken in an efficient manner on the UK’s electricity transmission system, ensuring all aspects (outages, land access, resources and safety) are in place on a national basis.

Key member of a small managerial team responsible for identifying process efficiency benefits across the UK Transmission business through a strategic review of the business. The review was critical to achieving objectives of improved network reliability and financial performance.

Undertook a variety of power system planning and control posts, culminating in 2.5 years of experience in the Wokingham network control room.

Following graduation commenced my career as a Special Projects Engineer responsible for Electrical Generation and Distribution system design onboard surface warships.
