I am a translational systems neuroscientist with a passion for bridging technology and neuroscience to enhance cognition and health. With over 20 years of experience designing novel experiments to study the neurophysiological underpinnings of attention and cognitive control using multimodal neuroimaging techniques (e.g., EEG, MEG, fMRI, and DTI), the current goal of my research is to unmask the neural mechanisms that account for age-related cognitive decline and to translate these basic neuroscience findings into cognitive neurotherapeutic interventions to alleviate cognitive impairments in diverse populations. I also have over a decade of experience working with industry collaborators to develop cognitive neurotherapeutic interventions to improve brain health using consumer technologies (e.g., wireless mobile devices, wearable sensors, and VR) and have a particular interest in merging complementary mind-body approaches, such as meditation and mindfulness, with neuroplasticity-based interventions to improve cognition while also enhancing overall wellbeing and mental health. As the Director of Multimodal Biosensing at Neuroscape, a translational neuroscience center in Neurology at UCSF, I lead a team of researchers who strive to gain a deeper understanding of an individual’s state in real time (e.g, their emotions, attention, arousal, awareness), which requires recording continuous data across multiple modalities and integrating these signals to generate meaningful and predictive composite measures. We have now assembled a powerful system to accomplish this goal coupled with either functional MRI or multichannel EEG.
