My professional philosophy is that comprehensive vision care includes not only examining but also educating each of my patients. Vision care starts with helping the patient understand why routine visits with his/her optometrist are vital to overall physical health, increasing the likelihood that the patient will take proper care of his/her vision. It's imperative that I help patients feel at ease as quickly as possible so they'll relay important details to me so that I can deliver the exact care they need. I believe comprehensive eye care begins when I first meet the patient in the waiting room. Because I understand that the average person feels at least some anxiety when visiting the optometrist, I always greet my patients with a smile and handshake. To further help them relax, I like to ask questions about them and their personal lives by using the FORD acronym to find out more about their Family, Occupation, Recreation, and Dreams. These questions help lower tension and stress levels and help establish trust in the doctor-patient relationship. From there, patients are more likely to be truthful and forthcoming about their vision needs.
