Perhaps the greatest value a PMO brings to a business is to provide a complete holistic view of an interdependent portfolio of projects, providing timely and actionable information to Management so they can make informed business decisions and effectively address issues. To that end, I directed a PMO team of 5 responsible for developing and maintaining standards and processes for portfolio management, project governance, project management and system development life-cycle (SDLC) methodology. I was accountable to the senior management team for resource forecasting, project portfolio executive dashboards and financial reporting, contingent workforce & vendor management and training/development of all IT associates.• Managed a budget ranging $31 - 48MM annually, including facilitation of project prioritization and financial planning. Optimized annual budget planning process, reducing planning time from 3 months to 6 weeks ($256,000 annual labour savings)• Championed a consistent and rigorous project management culture. Achieved a consistent project success rate - on time, on budget - of 85%.• Created and implemented a Project Management education curriculum. Coached and mentored 50+ IT Project Managers, including contract PMs, ensuring all PMs understood standards and procedures, increasing efficiency and streamlining delivery.• Introduced an on-demand online IT education curriculum, raising the bar for IT education while reducing the annual IT education budget by 40%.

I was pleased to lead a project in which we engaged industry expert consultants to perform a strategic assessment of our core business capabilities, resulting in a recommendation to the Board of Directors of a five-year roadmap to establish best-in-class capabilities across the enterprise.

In order to meet customers’ changing expectations and accommodate the way they want to shop, Sears had to become a true omni-channel retailer. In support of that strategic imperative I managed multiple IT application development projects with budgets up to $12MM for the Corporate Contact Centre and Catalogue business channels. These challenging projects involved many diverse technologies integrating custom built legacy applications with best in class “out of the box” solutions. I received the CIO Award for the successful implementation of a major upgrade of the telephony infrastructure and applications for all corporate Contact Centres.
I was personally chosen by the CIO to establish a PMO for the Sears Canada IT department after I applied comprehensive and effective project management disciplines to successfully deliver a large ERP project - on time and on budget. In order to replicate this success across the department and increase project success rates, I was asked to establish and implement standard best of breed tools and practices and provide timely and actionable project portfolio reporting to senior IT management. • Established corporate portfolio and project management standards and methodologies.• Selected and implemented an enterprise capable collaborative portfolio and project management application (currently known as CA Clarity PPM).• Developed timely and actionable project portfolio reports for senior IT management, reducing the time to deliver month end project financial reports by three weeks.• Developed and maintained a standard Project Management and SDLC methodology; supporting project teams with on the job coaching.• Established of a project management education curriculum supported and enhanced by a structured on-the-job coaching/mentoring program; successful completion earned a Masters Certificate in Project Management from Schulich School of Business.• Coordinated the efforts of the CIO and a committee of his report-directs to plan and implement the reorganization of the Sears Canada IT department in order to enhance operational effectiveness.
I gained some of the greatest satisfaction in my career leading the effort to acquire the T. Eaton Company in order to save this historic and iconic Canadian retail brand. Imagine the complexity and challenges of acquiring a new company and integrating it into your own operations without disrupting either business, even though Eatons was already in receivership and its operations were in the process of being shut down before the acquisition even started. As PMO Project Manager, I worked several 70+ hour weeks managing the project under very tight time constraints, because project success required the continuous, uninterrupted operation of the Eatons stores throughout the transition without negatively impacting the Sears business. All objectives were met on time and I received the Chairman’s Achievement Award for the successful delivery of this project. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed when the decision was later made to discontinue the Eatons sales channel.

I managed various system development projects in support of the Finance, Tax, and Merchandising business channels, including a PeopleSoft Financials ERP implementation with a budget of $17.8MM and a team of 90 full and part-time Sears Finance and IT associates, IT Contractors and Consultants. The project finished on time and on budget. I received the Chairman’s Achievement Award for the successful delivery of this project.
