About David Tong

I work to expose the true costs of fossil fuels and unlock a just transition to a clean energy future for us all. In particular, I lead Oil Change International's global industry campaigning, working to take away the oil and gas industry's social license and access to finance.Previously, I led WWF-New Zealand's climate change programme, working to secure good, knowledge-based policy from government and encourage businesses to voluntarily cut their emissions. Working closely with Oxfam Aotearoa, and Forest & Bird, I coordinated the civil society coalition supporting Generation Zero in their call for the Zero Carbon Act. At WWF, we led on the business outreach side of the campaign.Before that, I worked as a lawyer. I have both academic and practical expertise on international climate law. As a community lawyer, I provided legal advice to some of Auckland's most structurally disadvantaged and vulnerable people. As a commercial litigator, I represented some of New Zealand's largest companies. Finally, as a judges' clerk, assisting High Court judges with research and editing.
