Fx Technical DirectorManex Entertainment Aug 2000 - Mar 2001Alameda, CaIn late 2000, when CG cloth was just finding its way in to animation packages, I was tasked with figuring out how to put clothing on 100 fighting CG Agent Smiths. I decided to treat this as a simulation problem and did the math on simulation times, render farm machines, and the deadlines. I wrote a PERL based pipeline to import animated characters, automatically apply their clothing in the right place (that's important, right?!), and then simulate their garments on the render farm. The simulated data was then passed to the Lighting department for rendering. Using simulated clothing for this many characters was novel at the time, and I am quite proud of the solution implemented. -
