Profile bio

About David Clarke

I am a postdoctoral researcher at Monash University researching Antarctic biodiversity as part of the ARC funded Securing Antarctica's Environmental Future (SAEF) research program. However, I am also interested in biodiversity and conservation science more generally. This interest includes on-the-ground biodiversity data collection, data curation and analysis (biodiversity informatics), through to environmental policy. To get more experience in and exposure to the processes of environmental policy, I volunteer with the Ecological Society of Australia’s policy working group, of which I am co-chair.. Additionally, I am involved in a working group, funded by the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research (iDiv), that is tasked with developing indicators for monitoring biological invasions at national to global scales.

Listed skills include Research, Data Analysis, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and 5 others.

• Managing a research project covering a diverse range of topics that requires both qualitative and quantitative statistical analysis covering both univariate and multivariate techniques.• Applied an uncertainty framework to identify and categorise the uncertainty present when using the IUCNs Environmental Impact Classification for Alien Taxa, identifying and proposing options for reducing uncertainty in future assessments.• Performed the largest and most comprehensive assessment of the environmental impacts of alien insect species, exploring potential correlates of impact in addition to identifying data gaps and biases, and placing the results within existing invasion ecology hypotheses.• Managed, manipulated and analysed large scale spatial biodiversity and environmental data for the purposes of performing spatial conservation prioritization and species distribution modelling (both single and ensemble distribution modelling).• Member of an international working group (based out of the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research) developing indicators for monitoring biological invasions at a global scale, using synthesized biodiversity data sources. This included contributing to the development and testing of a tool for combining and harmonizing different sources of biodiversity data.• Collated, summarised, and reported information on biodiversity indicators and knowledge products pertaining to their potential for tracking progress against meeting a proposed EU biodiversity target, for the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).• Utilised the university’s high-performance computing (HPC) facility to expedite biodiversity data cleaning, spatial analysis, and species distribution modelling, familiarising myself with HPC concepts and Unix command line in the process.• Developed knowledge of and experience in biodiversity informatics, in particular biodiversity data mobilization and taxonomic harmonization.
