About David Bednar
I am interested in research that improves our understanding of plant-insect interactions as well as the behavior of social insects. Understanding plant-insect interactions is important because it provides sustainable, environmentally benign, solutions to pest management problems. For my Masters degree, I focused on the impact of invasive ant species on native, forest-dwelling, ant species. My PhD research focused on the interactions between an invasive forest pest and Fraser fir. It is likely the digestive enzymes found in balsam woolly adelgid cause the symptoms and eventual death of Fraser fir, but my work was the first to suggest possible mechanisms for reactions observed in the tree. These findings should advance breeding strategies targeted toward resistance profiles for Fraser fir. I am also interested in alternative pesticides for the control of insect pest species. Whether the solution be biocontrol, biopesticides, or microbial pathogens, I think nature has already provided us with sustainable solutions to pest management. In examining Fraser fir reactions to BWA I was able to extract plant defensive chemicals and test them in bioassays for insecticidal activity. I am interested in this type of research for the development of new biopesticides from naturally derived plant products.I enjoy staying active with extra-curricular activities as I strive to maintain or improve the quality of my community. As a researcher I strive to collaborate with experts from different areas that give valuable insight into my own research. The diversity of the activities I participate in and the collaborative efforts in my research reflect these qualities.
Listed skills include Entomology, Ecology, Science, Experimental Design, and 46 others.

Agriculturalist/Risk Analyst
CurrentThe CPHST Plant Epidemiology and Risk Analysis Laboratory (PERAL) is PPQ’s primary unit producing pest risk analyses (PRA). In this laboratory, a diverse group of scientists and professionals provides essential scientific support to riskbased policymaking across a broad range of phytosanitary issues. Staff members use sound science to analyze both import.
Research Scholar-Export Analyst-Entomologist
CurrentPromoting safe trade through technical justification for pest-host relationships.
Research Associate
Research pests associated with plants for planting in the US. Writing NAPPRA datasheets to help guide policies that protect our nations borders from exotic invasive species.
Research Specialist
Team leader in the production of predatory beetles (Sasajiscymnus tsugae) for classic biological control of the invasive hemlock woolly adelgid (Adelges tsugae).Conducting research to improve rearing techniques and understand plant insect interactions between adelgids and their hosts.
Graduate Student
My research focuses on the interactions between the Balsam Woolly Adelgid (Adelges piceae) and Fraser fir (Abies fraserii) in hopes of elucidating a mechanism for host plant resistance.
Graduate Student
My Master's thesis focused on the behavioral interactions between an invasive ant, Pachycondyla chinensis, and native termites (Reticulitermies spp. ) and how those interactions differ from native ant species (Aphaenogaster rudis). My work involved self designed behavioral research projects in the lab and field.
