As a Customer Service Host, my role was to provide a safe environment for both guests (customers) to the airport as well as all aircraft operations. ➣ I was approached and offered this position. I accepted. Easy, done deal some would say however not quite. You see the challenge I faced was that I had never worked on a farm before, had no knowledge of Alpaca’s, the Tourist Industry and by all accounts was more academically then technical minded (so my school told me).My only claim to fame was that I loved animals, could communicate with people, have a belief, perseverance and a determination to make this a success.This position required me, at most, to work outside of my comfort zone. There were many firsts for me and the most memorable was ➣the team’s spirit, guidance and leadership followed by ➣ the accountability and responsibility given to me by the owner to manage the farm while they were overseas ➣ shearing of 160 Alpacas within 2 days, ➣ farm tour guide for tourists and ➣ taking Alpaca’s to weddings, ➣ repairing farm gates and to name a few. The difficult times were also there like ➣ the losing of a baby Alpaca within a month of birth, ➣ working in adverse weather conditions however these were also opportunities to grow and learn more about myself. An awesome experience not only in debunking myths about my personality but moving the boundaries of my comfort zone and value to the Alpaca farming Industry and it was one of the reasons I applied for and accepted my next position – Customer Service Host, Auckland Airport. Six Thinking Hats is a system designed by Edward de Bono which describes a tool for group discussion and individual thinking involving six colored hats. "Six Thinking Hats" and the associated idea parallel thinking provides a mean for groups to plan thinking processes in a detailed and cohesive way, and in doing so to think together more effectively.Being a skilled and experienced facilitator I volunteered to implement and facilitate this programme to inmates.There was no formal training and so my preparation was based on on self research, talking to the Correctional Officers so as to align this program to fit and suite the needs of the students.This training environment was very different to a corporate / public training environment. Attention to detail, listening (understanding the language of the prisons), communicate (on their level), observing body language and being able to adapt quickly to situations were skills that I mostly applied. In turn, I learnt and grew in the process as well.I introduced a Certificate on completion of training, handed over to the students by their Case Officers. This not only created the increase of people wanting to do the course but it meant alot to the inmates for personal reasons.I believe in volunteering work - giving back so that others may benefit from your services, creates the opportunity to try something new, gain experience, develop skills, build confidence and meet new people.I am always open for a conversation.
