I’VE BEEN AN ENERGY GUY MY ENTIRE LIFE.I built my first wind turbine at the age of 14 with bicycle parts and a light bulb, to generate electricity for my maple sugarhouse. When it worked, I was hooked. Growing up in Vermont near the mountain-top site of the world’s first utility-scale wind turbine inspired my interest in making machines that harness renewable energy. That early inspiration has shaped my 30+ year career in the solar and wind energy industries, always with the guiding vision of an energy future not reliant on nuclear or fossil fuels.AllEarth Renewables (AER) designs and manufactures solar power tracking systems that can be combined for use at every scale of net metering: residential, business, and all the way up to large utility-scale solar farms. AER is now the leading solar tracking company in the country with over 5,000 installations. Why are we the leader? Simple: our tracker is different. It’s a grid-tied, dual-axis solar electric system, which uses GPS and wireless technology to follow the sun during the day. Just like my bicycle parts generator trial, I sketched my idea for the solar tracking system on the back of a napkin. A few months later, that first solar tracker was in the ground.My colleagues, friends, and family are my team. They’re my researchers, developers, and cheerleaders. As I walk into the office each day, I know I’m fortunate that my job isn’t just a job — it’s my calling and my cause. Many say I’m impassioned about what I do – and I am. But it will take many, many people to navigate the sweeping changes necessary to prepare for a future where nuclear and fossil fuels are not our main energy source. It’s my core belief and why I do what I do. Everything I’ve learned as an engineer and entrepreneur points toward the need for society to transition to clean, renewable energy sources, and for humanity to adapt to live within its energy means. I’m committed to be a driving force toward that renewable energy future.

It came on-line in December 2012 and supplies clean, renewable electricity to the Burlington Electric Department (BED) and provides about 8-9% of BED's energy demands. FACTS:• Four 2.5MW direct-drive Goldwind turbines on 265' towers together produce over 27 million kilowatt-hours of electricity each year. • Locally developed by Jim Harrison and family, financed by the Merchants Bank (a Vermont community bank), and constructed in 2012 by a great team of contractors including many Vermont companies.UPDATES (as of February 2016):• Annual energy production exceeded expectations by 22%• Produced over 33 million kWh in 2015• Represents enough renewable energy to power over 5,500 Vermont homes• Each year hundreds of local community members, school groups, and visitors are hosted for a tour of the facility and learn about the benefits of renewable energy

I founded NRG shortly after receiving my mechanical engineering degree from the University of Vermont. The wind energy industry was in its infancy and I wanted to be in on innovations as the industry grew. I did that, initially, in the spare bedroom of my rented house and ultimately expanded to a custom-built, LEED-Gold-certified facility. I stepped down as CEO in 2004 to establish AllEarth Renewables, which at the time was named Earth Turbines.I built this innovative manufacturing company, which designed and manufactured wind measurement instruments for the global wind industry. The company made, sold, and shipped products around the world to support critical, bankable data for determining the best sites for commercial wind farms.
