Private Equity Investment Fund AnalyticsFinance companies live and die by their models and I’ve often enjoyed working with this type of client.Pearl Street had previously retained an outside group to build a model that support transactions with both the bank funding the deal and the startups borrowing the money for this venture debt play. I was brought in because some of the parties didn’t understand the model results, and the transactions couldn’t close until everyone believed the model was giving accurate answers. In the end, all parties in the transaction were able to get behind the model. The result was two transactions closing for $150 million and $100 million.Created software and delivered analytic results used to structure, market, and report on private equity-related investment vehicles. Closed transactions include debt lines for venture lending; analytics included detailed views into portfolio company-event levels. Secured ratings from rating agencies for these transactions. Strategy, Financing, and Product DevelopmentWorked with both President and CFO of market innovator and leader in a new segment of the Hospitality Real Estate industry. Presented to board to address concerns about strategic direction of the company. Assisted the company in raising $275 million in capital. Developed Excel-based integrated short- and long-range planning systems, and developed two additional products that were sold to customers. During engagement, company grew in size from $50 million in property assets to nearly $500 million.

It took over 300 iterations of the plan, but eventually Open Range got funded to the tune of $367M including over $100M in equity.This was a monumental effort to create a business plan that was both fundable by private equity investors and approved by a federal agency for a loan, which required granular sub-plans for each of over 500 areas served in this plan.The deal involved major partners on the spectrum side and detailed economic analysis in the then-cutting-edge field of 4G rural communications.References available.

- Heavy focus on IT systems and processes supporting this wireless carrier’s business operations with particular focus on technical operations and capital forecasting.- Financial IT—Accounting and Reporting: Designed and developed financial IT system to consolidate data from Nextel’s 121 general ledger systems using OLAP database and spreadsheet tools to report results for newly formed management regions. System provided management reports for nearly two years when it was supplanted by a large-scale Oracle Financials implementation for the entire company.- Financial IT—Budgeting and Analysis: Created 40-user system initially for operating and capital budgeting on a multi-dimensional database platform with a spreadsheet front end. System was later expanded to include detailed financial analysis and budget versus actual reporting capabilities. System guided company’s growth from $150 million to $6 billion in revenue.
