I am a writer, strategist, and brand builder with content marketing expertise and experience working closely with decision-makers at Fortune 500 companies, spunky startups, family-owned businesses, and a variety of good causes. I’m also a practical idealist with a record of success leading creative teams and helping clients achieve more elegant and effective communications solutions. My career started in Washington, DC, where I worked on the development team for American Rivers, Inc. One of my big accomplishments then was an award-winning cause-related tie-in that we did with Calistoga Mineral Water, which raised money and American Rivers’ national exposure. For the longest time now, I’ve believed that the power of advertising, media, and marketing can be used for good. It’s where I started, and it’s where I am again today, which is why I recently narrowed my focus to supporting mission-driven organizations. My Not-for-Profit Experience: • Habitat for Humanity of Collier County, Naples, FL • St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, Marco Island, FL • Data for Democracy, Austin, TX • RGV Rapid Response, Brownsville, TX • American Red Cross, Denver, CO • American Rivers, Washington, DC I also recently volunteered with Meals on Wheels. In addition, I have experience helping to support mission-driven for-profit organizations. When I started Bonehook in 2010, I began working closely with a family of companies in Salt Lake City that provide HUD-subsidized housing for senior citizens and other related healthcare, residential, and workforce solutions for people with disabilities. When working with America’s top brands—and I’ve worked for many including Coors Brewing, McDonald’s, Oracle, HP, GE Healthcare, Columbia Sportswear, and Coca-Cola—the job is to earn the brand a greater share of the market. When going to bat for a mission-driven organization, the stakes are higher in the sense that not-for-profits have no resources or time to waste on bad ideas. This adds to the challenge and the excitement. It also brings the need for healthy teams to the fore, because healthy teams do amazing things.
