I work as the Education Director for The VII Foundation, where I have responsibility for VII Academy, VII Insider, and VII Community. I began as the managing editor of VII Insider and subsequently moved up to direct the foundation's education programs.

As a senior manager, I helped develop the foundation's mission and objectives and was responsible for strategic coordination and execution of the foundation's education and outreach programs, including the African Photojournalism Database, the Solutions Visual Journalism Initiative, and the Visual Thinking Strategies program, all designed to produce new and diverse ways of seeing and understanding the world.

I led a team whose skills connected award-winning visual stories to a growing global audience through a range of channels, platforms and partners. I helped formulate the foundation’s new brand purpose, created a theory of change, and established and edited a new online magazine. I'm proud to have led the strategic planning and design process for the foundation’s new website and online archive which recently won a number of awards, including the prestigious 2020 Webby Award for Websites (Associations).

I was part of the team running the Contest Overhaul Project, developing and implementing new verification procedures for the photo contest based on the research from my 'Integrity of the Image' report. I delivered 17 presentations on verification around the world as part of an extensive media industry consultation, and I directed the communications strategy for the project results. I also researched and wrote, with Adrian Hadland and Paul Lambert, "The State of News Photography: The Lives and Livelihoods of Photojournalists in the Digital Age" (Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, 2015).

I was Visiting Professor in the Peace and Conflict Studies Program, teaching 'Media War', in 2012, 2014, 2016.

During my freelance period, I was a part-time senior lecturer on the MA International Multimedia Journalism, a joint program run by Beijing Foreign Studies University and Bolton University in the UK.

I researched and analysed documentary photography/photojournalism, its context, and challenges in the new media economy. I was an advisor/curator/editor for photographers working on documentary projects; a multimedia producer in collaboration with documentary photographers/photojournalists; and a consultant/lecturer for NGOs and university programs on photography, multimedia journalism and cross-platform storytelling.

I was commissioned to research the international standards and practices around the detection of photographic manipulation and wrote the report "The Integrity of the Image".

I was commissioned to research the changing media economy and wrote the report "Visual Storytelling in the Age of Post-Industrial Journalism".

I did administration, teaching and research in visual geography and political geography. I was convenor of the Politics-State-Space research cluster (2004-07), Academic Director of the International Boundaries Research Unit (2007-08, 2009-10) and Associate Director of the interdisciplinary Durham Centre for Advanced Photography Studies (2004-10).

I taught and researched politics, visual culture and international relations. I convened courses, supervised both UG and PG students and undertook departmental administration. My award-winning book "National Deconstruction: Violence, Identity and Justice in Bosnia" (University of Minnesota Press, 1998) was published while at Newcastle. From 2002 onwards I served on the Faculty Strategy and Policy Board, Faculty Research Strategy Group, and Faculty Directors of Research Group in Humanities and Social Sciences. I created and founded the Newcastle Institute for the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities, and served as its first director between 2002-04. During that time I secured £3.6 million of SRIF2 funding for a digital media and creative practice centre (Culture Lab) and I was the academic project manager for this centre.

I did administration, teaching and research in politics and international relations. It was at Keele I began the two-year research project which resulted in the publication of one of my most important articles, “Atrocity, Memory, Photography: Imaging the Concentration Camps of Bosnia -The Case of ITN versus Living Marxism". The first part was published in the Journal of Human Rights 1:1 (2002), p. 1-33, and the second part was published in the Journal of Human Rights 1:2 (2002), pp. 143-72.

I adminstered and taught a graduate programme for new recruits to the diplomatic service.

I taught and researched politics and international relations. I convened courses, supervised both UG and PG students, and undertook departmental administration. My books "Writing Security: United States Foreign Policy and the Politics of Identity," revised edition (University of Minnesota Press, 1998); and "Politics Without Principle: Sovereignty, Ethics and the Narratives of the Gulf War" (Lynne Rienner Publishers, 1993) were written while at Johns Hopkins.

I was the second most senior person on a staff of eleven for then Leader of the Australian Democrats. As the chief administrator, I was responsible for all personnel matters, and the logistics of running offices in Melbourne as well as Canberra. As the Senator’s press secretary and one of the senior speechwriters, I was the member of staff who travelled with the Senator wherever he went – especially during the two federal election campaigns of 1983/84 – and was thus in constant contact with constituents, the media, parliamentary colleagues as well as Government and opposition ministers and their staffs.
