Organized loose conceptual ideas and heuristics into a physically-sound mathematical and mechanical framework.• Wrote computer simulations: Markov models of heterogeneous decomposition networks, inverse method for identifying a rate distribution from an observed decay time series, statistical methods to identify dominant control parameters of complex systems, finite element model of a reaction-diffusion system in random media, Lattice-Boltzmann model to investigate the stability of a fluid-particle medium and the evolution of natural erosion processes.
