I spent nine years at Cambridge studying maths and physics, and earning a PhD in geometry; and then 25 years as a senior member of Pictet Asset Management’s well-recognized global emerging markets investment team. Sustainability has always been central to my time at Pictet, as a long-term investor in high-risk markets. In recent years this has meant working to develop and embed the firm’s successful modern ESG process within our emerging markets franchise. I know how to grapple with uncertainty and complexity, how to take decisions in the face of risk, and to bring colleagues and clients on board. My performance track record is strong as an investor across wide-ranging and unpredictable countries, even as they have changed and evolved over the decades. This has also meant understanding capital markets, their deals and their cycles, and successfully navigating a series of far-reaching economic and political crises. I’m used to leading conversations with senior company managements as well as with retail and institutional clients. And colleagues and ex-colleagues have long spoken well of my open, empowering, collaborative style of working.******************************WHAT NEXTThis century has some big issues—and opportunities—looming large. Since my undergraduate days the science of climate change has been clear. And there is no doubt that global human welfare is running up against ecological constraints beyond carbon. Sharing in the development of so many countries and company managements since the nineties has been a huge privilege. I’m now taking time to decide whether, for me, the next step means re-engaging with generalist emerging equities, or if I should redeploy my broad experience and science base. I want to be thinking seriously about the world, and with purpose—to be making decisions with consequence. Along with the amazing companies, that has always been the joy of working in investment. So I may remain in asset management but with more focus on energy transition and biodiversity. But I’m also considering whether it’s possible to make an impact in other directions, perhaps in the financing or deployment of real assets, as an investor or advising individual companies—or in early-stage science and technology, at a company level or through VC.
