About David Covert

I am a full stack application and API developer that can do almost anything you can think of that does not take place in a web browser. That said, I can handle light ASP client side work. I do not know JavaScript but am interested in Blazor and WASM. I require very little management, having served as a department director at one point. Since 2008 I have been through at least a dozen full software development life cycles. All these projects were addressed by a small team of 3 to 5 and I highlight some of them in the Portfolio section below. I have at one time or another worked directly with all of these:C#, VB.NET, MS-SQL/MySQL, Entity Framework, RESTful APIs (creating and using), Winforms, WPF, Xamarin Forms, ASP.NET, WCF/SignalR, Razor/Blazor, Embedded C++, VMWare, 3rd Party APIs, Azure (App Services/SQL/Notification Hub), Google Play Store, Jira, TFS/GitPortfolio• REST API – 2017 : 2018 : Added a high performance API to an existing product so that a web based interface could be added to the current product. • AVFusion – 2016 : 2019 : An application used by police departments, including the NYPD and the San Jose California PD, to reserve interrogation rooms and record the audio and video of interrogation sessions. The sessions can have bookmarks and notes placed in the recordings for later search and retrieval, allowing investigators to piece together information from seemingly unrelated interrogations. This project included an IoT element that required me to produce firmware in C++. In 2019 the NYPD commissioned a companion mobile app to allow officers access to reservation system while out of the station.• C3Fusion – 2009 : 2015 : A PSIM (Physical Security Information Management) suite that brings together video feeds, sensor data, alarm data, access point monitoring (badge reader, facial recognition, license plate reader) and geolocated mapping into a common operation picture to protect critical infrastructure. Here is a Fox News story about a city in Connecticut that implemented the product: https://vimeo.com/162407549• WatchStander – 2014:2016 : This was a video surveillance application utilizing a multifunction controller rather than a keyboard and mouse to monitor, record, and replay security footage aboard US Navy capital ships including at least one nuclear aircraft carrier.• CertiVision – 2012-2015 : Another custom application to video record and archive sessions. This time for an organization that examines and certifies the qualifications of international medical graduates before they enter US graduate medical education.

  • Softtoolsmith, Ltd
    Lead Developer
    Softtoolsmith, Ltd May 2009 - Oct 2017
I write web-based and traditional software applications using C#, Winforms, WPF, WCF, SignalR, EntityFramework, WPF, ASP, .NET, IIS, and SQL to glue together or extend the utility of legacy systems or to provide new tailored applications to support business processes for which no pre-packaged application exists. Some embedded C++ and Xamarin as well.Have you ever wished that your IT system did something that it does not do? Do you use spreadsheets to fill in gaps where your current back office systems are lacking functionality? Do you use them as duck tape to hold your office information and processes together? I can produce a real solution that fits the need, operates efficiently and that monitors and reports on the process. And when I am done, I can also write the documentation and conduct training classes on the finished product.Recent work includes a supply chain process control application for Schlumberger in ASP.NET, writing a comprehensive physical security application with streaming video for public utilities, municipalities (see video links) and investment houses, video surveillance applications for the US Navy and a medical certification agency, and a Windows service that acts as a gateway between two incompatible proprietary protocols.

  • Sailtech, Inc.
    Technical Services Manager
    Sailtech, Inc. Oct 2002 - Oct 2006
I have a Minor in Electrical Engineering and had yet to get much use from it. Wanting to explore electronics more fully I hired into Sailtech as a bench technician... fixing radars, radios, GPS chart plotters and such. I was very good. And very fast. It was also discovered that I could do pretty much anything with a computer so I was tasked with every technical challenge that the company encountered, including performing a backoffice system migration with no migration tool from the legacy system and an e-commerce site from the ground up.
  • Bluewater Cruising
    Yacht Broker
    Bluewater Cruising Oct 2001 - Oct 2002
During my post-Microsoft years, let's call it a sabbatical, I took a job as a commissioned yacht broker. This may seem quite odd given that the rest of my experience is all technology-centric. Understand then that I did this as a self-improvement exercise. I had always bemoaned the fact that I couldn't sell ice in the desert and I thought it was about time that I learned to sell. Being a believer in the immersion school of education, I took the job on a commission-only basis. It came as a complete shock that after the year was over I had actually made more than was expected of a first year broker. Not only had I survived the first year of a sales position, but I had actually done better than most.
