About David Pope

Systemic thinker with a proven track record of delivering excellent results. Naturally curious with a desire to learn while striving to coach others by sharing information and connecting people to improve outcomes and grow their careers. I love learning and am fortunate to have forged a career in which I've learned how to effectively work across multi-functional global teams and have an understanding of businesses that spans across the entirety of an organization. To be successful, everyone working together needs to understand and agree on the actual issue at hand and the desired outcomes. Success in large part relies on communicating in a "shared language". Sounds simple; however, I was involved in a large complex enterprise software deal spanning months, and while we were making progress, we had a one meeting stall for hours. What broke the stalemate was realizing that our client had a different expectation of the output from an aggregation than our team. Neither side was right or wrong, we just had different meanings for the same word, aggregation. It literally took our team less than five minutes to demonstrate the type of aggregation the client needed, which was critical in helping us win the deal.My career in the software industry started working in R&D and IT as an applications developer supporting internal business applications and moved into a consulting role supporting external clients. Having gained a strong understanding of how enterprise business processes work in developing products I switched career paths and joined sales and marketing. Here I gained experience and understanding of the customer lifecycle. I spent several years collaborating and leading cross-functional teams as a sales engineer, solutions architect, and product manager supporting enterprise sales across all industries. Then I moved into management where I built out a team of sales engineers and industry consultants supporting sales into the energy industries. I enjoy hiring new people and helping them grow their careers. I like mentoring others and sharing my experience by moderating panels or presenting at conferences or guest lecturing at universities. I've earned 15 patents across multiple countries, and I am honored to have been able to encourage more than 10 colleagues to successful earn their own patents. Outside of my career, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, working out, DIY projects, and am honored to serve as the chairman for the volunteer Advisory Board for the UNC Center of Excellence in Community Mental Health.

Jun 2024 - Present

Senior Manager, Presales

Sas

Cary, Nc, Us

In this role, I am responsible for hiring, leading, and retaining a team of sales engineers composed of technical experts and industry consultants. I also hired and mentored both summer and year long interns and was involved in helping to hire account executives, mentor others across our organization. Our team bridges the gap between business needs and technology by continuing to expand both our technical skills and domain expertise to help solve our customer's business problems. Analytics provides strategic insight/foresight, but it is our people that enable our clients to make use of technology to help them drive better decision making across their organizations. Furthermore, I helped coordinate and support deals spanning across different lines of business especially in government and our internet of things (IoT divisions) as well as global regions including Europe, Canada, South America, and Asia Pacific. I worked directly with sales management and account executives on account strategy, supported quarterly business review (QBR)s and planning sessions, worked across multifunctional teams that include: alliances, product management, professional services, education, customer success, R&D, and acted as a lead liaison with marketing in supporting conferences and events which helps move sales forward and develops new pipeline.

Manager, Presales

Sas

Cary, Nc, Us

In this role, I was responsible for hiring, leading, and retaining a pre-sales team composed of sales engineers to support sales. We bridge the gap between business needs and technology by continuing to expand both our technical skills and domain expertise to help solve our customer's business problems. Analytics provides strategic insight/foresight, but it is our people that enable our clients to make use of technology to help them drive better decision making across their organizations.

May 2013 - Apr 2018

Principal Solutions Architect

Sas

Cary, Nc, Us

As a Principal Solutions Architect, I worked on a expert overlay team that focused on internal sales enablement and external sales support globally to solve complex business problems for our clients by integrating SAS technology, whether it’s data integration, predictive analytics, reporting (a.k.a. Business Intelligence), or a combination of all of the above with other systems/technologies. This group focused on how to use SAS's existing capabilities and in particular how to leverage enterprise architecture with big data analytics technologies like: grid, in-database, and in-memory processing capabilities to solve business problems in the most efficient and/or fastest way possible. I helped to develop and acted as a lead coordinator of a new highly successful sales program which directly impacted and contributed to 10s of millions worth of revenue for my organization. Another highly successful and innovative project that also helped to bring in 10s of millions of dollars revenue that I helped develop within this group was a process to identify new cross-sell opportunities within existing accounts. Later in my career I re-imagined and championed the change of this process from a spreadsheet and heavily manual process into a fully automated process/report that was ultimately adopted globally and integrated into our sales CRM.

Jul 2010 - May 2013

Senior Systems Engineer

Sas

Cary, Nc, Us

I enjoyed discussing/showing clients how SAS can help drive innovation and improve performance across multiple industries: Government, Finance, Health Care, Education, etc... In this position I helped close software sales ranging from 10s of thousands of dollars to over $1 million all over the phone/computer by discussing as well as demonstrating how statistics, data mining, and forecasting can add value and improve efficiency within any organization. I also developed a new web based application both simplify and improve the process used by sales to request presales assistance. This application expanded from my initial group to be used by every group I moved to within the organization with the result that this is now used globally by 100s of people both within sales and presales and within other support teams across mutliple divisions.

May 2005 - Jun 2010

Application Developer/Consultant

Sas

Cary, Nc, Us

In the first part of my career, I worked in R&D, IT, and our cloud or hosting group as an applications developer/consultant supporting internal applications and processes which lead me to working with external clients to solve their business problems with automation, analytics, and reporting. I sought out the opportunity to work for SAS in Europe during this phase of my career which was very helpful in building my international team communication skills which I continue to leverage and further develop to this day.
