  • Sheffield Hallam University
Principal Research Fellow, Sports Engineering Research Group
Sheffield Hallam University Mar 2006 - Present
    Sheffield, United Kingdom
I am a principal research fellow in the Sports Engineering Research Group (SERG) in the Department of Sport & Physical Activity at SHU. I joined the group in 2000 when it resided in the Dept Mechanical Engineering at University of Sheffield. The group re-located to Sheffield Hallam University in 2006 as part of strategic move to bring sports-related research groups together. I began working life as a technician apprentice at Rolls Royce in Bristol, and then went on to obtain a BEng Aeronautics and Astronautics from University of Southampton, and MSc Underwater Technology from University of Cranfield. This was followed by a period in the Oil & Gas Industry working first as an ROV pilot and then in a safety engineering role in offshore oil rig design. A sabbatical to explore an interest in creative writing was followed by commencement of a role that combined my love of sport and engineering. With 20 years as part of SERG I have developed and managed large academia-industry collaborative projects such as the Sports SET Network, the regional sports cluster initiative SportsPulse, and the EU funded ProFit FieldLab project. I currently lead a collaborative research programme with Westfield Health, on behalf of the Advanced Wellbeing Research Centre. I have research interest in the dynamic performance of swung implements, focused mainly on cricket bats, conducted projects with Gunn & Moore, B3 Cricket, and with Decathlon (FLX). I also work on low-cost camera-based systems for pitch usage monitoring in outdoor public access spaces. I act as a consultant to Clearcast Ltd to review technical claims on TV advertising. I teach Enterprise & Innovation to sports science undergraduates at levles 5 and 6. Exploring complexity thinking through application of the Cynefin framework for Innovation Hub development, and organisational wellbeing.
