XCOM Wireless is a start-up developing a micro-electromechanical RF relay components. I improved the design and fabrication process to produce a high-yielding, reliable, relay. I led the product team, setup and led the manufacturing team and assisted with fund raising by developing detailed cost models and financial projections. During my work here I started to consult – first one day a week and then up to 4 days a week when I started consulting full-time.

WiSpry (spun out of Coventor) is a semiconductor start-up developing a micro-electromechanical RF switched capacitor device for cell phones. I was one five founders that started WiSpry, going a year without pay (a VC called this being ‘scrappy’) and ultimately landing a $1M A-1 round. I then established a unique foundry agreement with a major semiconductor supplier to develop the required custom fabrication process, which in turn led to a $7M A-2 rounds.

Coventor is company that provides finite element analysis tools for electromechanical simulation and offered engineering design services. I opened a design service office in southern California and hired and managed the team there. I was promoted to the manager of all design services engineers (13 Ph.D.’s), which delivered contract design services worth over $5M+. I wrote work statements and led the development teams.

MicroSensors (spun out of Irvine Sensors) is a start-up developing a micro gyro for automotive applications. I was one of the early employees and got first sense element sample working using bench top equipment. From there, I found an expert in gyro electronics and led the development of a gyro demo box, which led to over $4M in funding from a major automotive supplier and a major aerospace supplier.

Ford Microelectronics (now Visteon) was a subsidiary of Ford Motor that produced two generations of airbag crash sensors using MEMS accelerometers and ASICs. I led the team responsible for design and fabricating the sense element structure and identifying and solving key product issues that enabled one of the first plastic packaged airbag accelerometers. I assisted assessing and selling the Colorado Springs operation.

Delco electronics (now Delphi, formerly part of General Motors) is company that produces automotive electronics. Right out of school, I designed the sense element and assisted in the launch of what is likely the first silicon-micromachined accelerometer for airbag systems put into high volume production.
