The Oa

Currently working as the warden of The Oa, assisting with the site management of this 2,100 hectare nature reserve and working farm on the Isle of Islay. The reserve is home to the Red-billed Chough, our priority species and the fundamental reason behind the purchase of the reserve. Chough here are heavily monitored and foraging habitat provided through strategic grazing of south facing coastal grasslands, using cattle and sheep.Several schedule one and many red listed bird species call the reserve home and are monitored throughout the year, or via seasonal surveys.

Washington

Assisting in the daily management of the nature reserve at WWT Washington. This includes the planned development and daily practical management of the various habitats throughout the year. Key roles being; maintaining the day to day reserve infrastructure, volunteer and placement student coordination, public engagement, species monitoring and practical habitat tasks. All of the above in accordance with current management policies, the five year management plan, environmental regulations, health and safety and safe working practices.Wildlife and ornithological surveys are a large feature of my job; daily surveys, monthly WEBS counts, bird ringing, data collection and key species monitoring being staples.Key species including red listed breeding birds; Willow Tit, Lapwing, Redshank and Linnet. Outside of the breeding season the monitoring of our large wintering Curlew roost is crucial; our site hosting one of the largest inland winter roosts in the country.

Northern England

The main purpose of this role was the prevention of the disturbance and destruction of breeding Hen Harrier in the Forest of Bowland AONB, Lancashire. The position involved carrying out overnight nest watches in remote areas of moor. Several nests were monitored, with nest watches commencing once the female had constructed the nest and continued through until the young had fledged or the nest failed.We also monitored other raptor species that were breeding in the vicinity against disturbance, including Peregrine, Merlin and Short-eared Owl.The nest surveillance was overt, with the intention of educating and deterring persecution rather than a covert attempt to catch perpetrators in the act.
