"Development of a design optimization process using the example of a valve geometry".Scope of the work:The work aimed to realize an efficient design optimization process applicable to any kind of structural component. Optimization scope was to reduce as much as possible the mass value, keeping the structure mechanical behaviour consistent. Using the software ANSYS Workbench and OptiSLang 4 I provided an efficient parametric design optimization process based on the Design of Experiments and the Response Surface Method. I optimized the oxygen/hydrogen balancing nozzle of the Ariane 5 launcher upper stage obtaining a mass reduction of 22%. The design optimization process has been validated by optimizing more complex geometries, applying 320 different load case combinations for each design point. Even for the complex geometry the mass reduction was very interesting, showing an improvement of around 10%. The methodology and the optimization result has been shared with the whole Space Structural Mechanics Department and Dr.-Ing. Johannes Will (President of the company Dynardo GmbH) invited me to join the 12th WOST: Weimar Optimization and Stocastic Conference Conference 2015 in Weimar to present my work.
