I worked with the 20-strong non-life Actuarial & Data Science team at BDO, having been a Partner for a decade and Head of Actuarial and Data Science at Moore Stephens, with whom BDO merged in 2019. Having started my career at a Lloyd’s managing agent and then worked at two different firms of consulting actuaries, I joined Moore Stephens in 1998 and have well over 20 years’ experience.The team and I worked with firms both in the UK and internationally, and with mutual and commercial insurers, and reinsurers, including the Lloyd’s and London Market, from both consultancy and internal/external audit perspectives. Our support mainly covered reserving, pricing, capital modelling, outward RI modelling, and regulatory/solvency requirements, as well as actuarial/IT system integrations.When we merged with BDO at the end of January 2019, I had planned to take the same Partner, Head of Actuarial and Data Science role, but we discovered that I had a complex regulatory financial conflict of interest with BDO (nothing sinister!) and could not join them. I therefore went over as an external consultant to them and wound down my role over the following 12 months.I spent much of my career at MS & BDO helping firms with stochastic modelling and predictive analytics, and worked with Moore Stephens Consulting (now known as RuleBook) to develop the integration of their IT and systems solutions with actuarial models and solutions. I became increasingly involved in all aspects of Data Science (predictive analytics, data mining, machine learning, big data etc), and in 2017 joined the IFoA's working party on 'Modelling, Analytics and Insights from Data'. I was responsible for development and recruitment of BDO's Data Science team.I was also on the judging panel of the Royal Statistical Society's "Statistical Excellence in Journalism" awards and was chairman of the IFoA’s working party: ‘Spreadsheet Models: Governance, Risk and Control’ from 2013 to 2016.
