Arcturus Therapeutics a leading clinical-stage messenger RNA medicines company focused on the development of significant opportunities in respiratory and rare diseases. Arcturus has extensive experience in the discovery and development of mRNA medicines and vaccines, and design and utilization of lipid-mediated drug delivery systems. Current programs include an mRNA therapeutic for the urea cycle defect, ornithine transcarbamylase (OTC) deficiency, and an inhaled mRNA replacement strategy targeting cystic fibrosis.

Dec 2020 - Present

Medical Director

North Chicago, Illinois, Us

I led a committed and engaged clinical strategy team at AbbVie to develop transformational combination therapies for cystic fibrosis patients. In this role, I managed cross-functional interactions between Clinical Development and discovery, preclinical sciences, CMC, Medical Affairs and Commercial functions. I led the clinical strategy team including safety, pk, regulatory and statistics in designing and executing innovative clinical trials for the challenging clinical research landscape, and managed relationships with other stakeholders in the community including CF physicians, patient organizations and research networks.

Mar 2014 - May 2020

Medical Consultant, Acting Medical Director

Protocol development and execution for Phase II development of monoclonal antibodies for severe asthma and cystic fibrosis.

Mar 2012 - Aug 2013

Medical Consultant

Biotech, Pharma, And Device Companies

Scope of work includes aerosol delivery issues, protocol design (Phase I-IV), strategies to improve clinical trial enrollment, and messaging for marketing and education for providers and patients. Consulting for Mpex Pharmaceuticals in 2004 led to our lab characterizing aerosol devices for their formulations, designing and executing the Phase I study, and later our CF Center leading enrollment for the successful completion of Phase II and III studies of inhaled levofloxacin. I also advised and encouraged Pathogenesis (now Novartis) to develop TOBI as a dry-powder formulation using Pulmosphere technology. We were high recruiters in the clinical trials that led to TOBI Podhaler approval in the U.S., Canada, and several other countries., reducing the treatment burden for thousands of patients worldwide.

Mar 1994 - Mar 2012

Director, Aerosol Research Lab And Cystic Fibrosis Center

The aerosol research lab was set up with the chief goal of understanding and improving the delivery of inhaled medications, with major emphasis on children. Since I was the director of both the 'basic science' aerosol lab as well as the Cystic Fibrosis Center, we were able to do several translation studies for inhaled therapeutics in an attempt to improve lung targeting and reduce the treatment burden of CF and other respiratory diseases. I was honored to be able to translate 'aerosol speak' to a more digestible form for patients, caregivers and clinicians through a series of publications and lectures at regional, national and global venues. During my tenure as CF Center Director, we also engaged in dozens of clinical research trials, and we were often the global leaders in enrollment for these studies. The reward was the successful launch of several new therapies for the unmet needs of cystic fibrosis.
