Breakthrough Collaborative's Dual Mission: Students - Low Income & First in Family to attend college - will graduate from high school ready and prepared to succeed in and graduate from college.Students teaching students; teachers coaching teachers.College students - many of whom are students of color and/or STEM majors - will be inspired and prepared, through a pre-professional program, to become transformative public school teachers and/or advocates for public education in their adult lives. The Breakthrough Collaborative consists of 24 affiliates serving thousands of students and Teaching Fellows throughout the nation. Students participate in three years of middle school summer program and are mentored through high school graduation and college matriculation.Dr. David E. Jackson served as Head of School for the San Francisco Day School from 2007-2015. SFDS is a co-ed independent day school of 400 students in grades K-8. SFDS is known for its academic rigor and child-centered education. Students regularly engage in critical thinking, creative problem solving, and 21st Century Skills (Habits of Mind). A vibrant and comprehensive program for all students in both visual arts and instrumental music is a hallmark of SFDS.At SFDS Dr. Jackson led the effort to expand the Breakthrough Program at SF Day from a two-year program for 5th and 6th graders to an eight-year program serving students from 5th grade through high school graduation and matriculation into college. This expansion will enable low income public school students who are often the first in their family to go to college to realize their ambitions. This expansion was approved by the SFDS Board of Trustees and has the full support of the SFDS community.Dr. Jackson leads workshops in defining academic rigor & the essential qualities of excellent teachers, Diversity and Cross-Cultural Communication Competency, and Strategic Planning.
