Language Arts Teacher
CurrentI have taught grades 10, 9, 8, 7, and 6 at three different schools nearly 30 school years. I am currently teaching 9th grade English at DeLand HIgh School. In 2005 I was the Volusia County Teacher of the Year. My comic strip, Mr. Fitz, has been running in local newspapers and online for over 20 years and has made appearances in Voices from the Middle, The Washington Post's Answer Sheet blog, and the New York Times. At the Stetson University HATS program for gifted students, I have taught cartooning and fiction writing for over a decade, including a summer class where students in grades 4 through 12 write a collaborative novel in just one week. My published books include the YA novels Making My Escape (currently being revised and reimagined), Portents, and Portals (co-written with my son), and the teacher professional books Writing Extraordinary Essays and Teaching Students to Make Writing Visual and Vivid (currently available digitally only). I have recently finished writing and workshopping my first full-length play, The Music of the Spheres.
