Manager, Electrical & Controls Engineering
Hired and managed an excellent team of Electrical and Controls engineers which enabled the development, testing and integration of Cellares products, delivering multiple prototype instruments and robotic systems.
Senior Systems & Controls Engineer
Developed the foundational electrical and controls architecture for a novel Cell Therapy manufacturing platform. Successfully delivered multiple prototype instruments to carry out complex processes in collaboration with a skilled team of mechanical and systems engineers and working closely with process sciences during experimental testing.
Staff Automation Controls Engineer
(~1 year) Lead a small team developing custom electronics and software for manufacturing optimization. Projects my team successfully developed included:▪ Cost-optimized embedded pick-to-light system incorporating CAN daisy-chaining and push notifications using MQTT and Wi-Fi, based on STM32 and the Arm Mbed platform; including electronics design, firmware, and contract manufacturing▪ Control software for modular production line leveraging high speed (1-2 m/s) precision rack-and-pinion based conveyance with synchronized software gearing between PLCs, used to successfully implement a number of production steps for the Model S Raven drive unit▪ Custom TCP/IP based communication drivers for Siemens S7 to enable production software for the Model 3 line in ChinaIn addition to management responsibilities for my team, I developed the following:▪ Initial C++ software stack for pick-to-light system based on Arm Mbed with proof-of-concept over-CAN updates using ISO-TP ▪ Initial software in TwinCAT to enable dynamic gearing of the rack-and-pinion conveyance system▪ Proof of concept driver for Beckhoff ADS protocol in Golang
Senior Automation Controls Engineer
As a Senior Automation Controls Engineer, I was tasked with taking a lead in Data Systems integration for Model 3.▪ Designed the control architecture and PLC code for equipment integration into a new Manufacturing Execution System using RESTful APIs. Worked with the MES team in the planning of the project, and wrote the server-side code framework for transaction management to support multiple PLC vendor platforms. This code is successfully used for integrating over 500 PLCs into the MES system. ▪ Worked with the Database Administration (DBA) team to design and implement the Model 3 PLC database architecture utilized for storing alarms, equipment status and tag history for over 500 PLCs.▪ Worked with a new DevOps team to plan and successfully deploy a standard HMI platform across over a hundred servers and a thousand clients, and helped to build tools to enable engineers to rapidly deploy their code changes to many target systems.▪ In this role I interfaced daily with individuals and leaders from many teams such as Manufacturing Engineering, IT, and Sustaining Engineering.
Controls Engineer
2014-2016 Joined the Automation Controls team within Tesla, where I took on a role as a Data Systems Lead. ▪ Developed a Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system for the Model S Body Line, including live and historical reporting of equipment status and efficiency metrics for automated and manual work stations. Developed standardized PLC code for collecting OEE metrics and supervised its implementation throughout the line. ▪ Developed queue management software for the Model X Body Line used for managing the start of job variants across multiple sub-assembly lines.▪ Developed queue management software for the Model S/X Seat Lines, used for managing the start of jobs based on customer orders and delivery of completed jobs to the General Assembly Line based on build order in the Paint Shop.2013-2014 Supported operations as a Sustaining Controls Engineer primarily in the Body in White and General Assembly areas. Assisted in safety buyoffs and risk assessments, code and electrical changes for cycle time improvement projects, and general machine troubleshooting. Obtained Certified Machine Safety Expert (CSME) certificate from Pilz, and utilized that knowledge to help develop the standard Risk Assessment form used for internal projects.
Controls Engineer (Contract)
Coordinated development projects for company hydro and thermal power generation assets. Assigned as Lead Controls Engineer (EIT) on the Nine Mile HED Unit 1 & 2 Rehabilitation Project, coordinating between design consultants and company craftsmen in the electrical, civil and mechanical disciplines to perform preparatory work for the project including installation of a new 125VDC battery bank, removal of old 2.3kV switchgear, and installation of a new interim station service transformer and auto-transfer switch.
Electrical Engineer
Collaborated with mechanical and software engineers to research and develop innovative automation products targeted to the life sciences and agricultural industries. Acted as field-service support engineer for existing products and interacted directly with domestic and international customers on-site and over the phone on a regular basis. ▪ Developed large automation systems with PLC and computer-based control, utilizing front-ends written in Java and C# and hardware backends running on a mixture of Allen-Bradley CompactLogix, Galil DMC motion controllers, and National Instruments CompactRIO as well as custom pick-and-place robotics platforms manufactured by Yamaha, Fanuc, and Mitsubishi.▪ Responsible in all aspects of electrical controls design from the ground up, including process conceptualization, writing of specifications, creating schematics, sending out for quote, documentation and redlining, building, programming, functional testing, safety testing (including TUV field inspections and CE compliance testing), and final field-install and support.▪ Experience with machine vision including choosing optics and lighting and writing integrated applications using Cognex VisionPro, C#, and third-party imaging libraries to achieve part identification and position tracking.
Operator
Electrical Engineer
▪ Designed and maintained quality assurance test setups for high power RF amplifiers, including thermal infrared imaging for verification of temperature balance, RF leakage assessment using custom antennas per specification, and gain, flatness, and bandwidth analysis. ▪ Performed transistor biasing of amplifiers using variable, fixed and/or laser trimmable resistors. ▪ Manufactured prototype RF circuit boards and aluminum housings using automation equipment. ▪ Setup and ran MYDATA part placement equipment for placing surface-mount components. ▪ Wrote specifications and routinely assisted staff in ensuring product conformance. ▪ Developed internal web-browser based product and employee tracking system.
