I clerk/manage 39 barristers, ten of whom are King's Counsel. One aspect I particularly get job satisfaction from is recommending a barrister to a client and seeing the client return as a result.I also receive gratification in feeling that I contribute to the successful career paths of many barristers and seeing them appointed as King's Counsel or to the High Court Bench.

A few years later my senior clerk decided to leave. I was twenty one and thought there was no chance of me being considered for the position. The Chambers interviewed a large number of applicants. They got to a short list of three, but were undecided between the applicants or whether any of the them were suitable.They then asked me whether I would be prepared to be, "caretaker" senior clerk. I was pleased with their confidence in me. A day or two later a clerk who have left the profession, who I had know well previously, had just returned from Cyprus following the coup there and telephoned me asking whether the position was still open. I explained what had happened and then spoke to the Head of Chambers suggesting they met him. To my surprise I needed to persuade them they ought to see him as they were contend with me the arrangements suggested. However they did see him and appointed him as senior clerk. We worked very well together and it was he who recommended to Chambers that I be made Joint Senior Clerk.

When the first junior clerk left Chambers to be a senior clerk in Manchester, I very much hoped the Chambers would offer me the position. Although I was probably not sufficiently experienced I still felt I have achieved enough to be given the opportunity. However, they started to enquire of other more experienced clerks. Coincidentally another set of Chambers were also looking for a first junior clerk which I applied for and was offered the job. This made my own set reconsider me and in fact offered me the job. After some deliberation I decided to stay with the devil I knew.

I had planned to train as an Accountant but after taking a temporary job at One Essex Court, I decided I really enjoyed the law and decided to make a career for myself in Chambers.
