I worked on a team that writes tools for the rest of the software engineers in the networking software unit at Broadcom. We solve problems like, "we need to build every commit in X different ways and test them on Y different systems connected to Z different traffic generators. That takes 90 minutes on 8 systems. Figure out how to do 200 per day."I primarily use Clojure and love with it, but you could guess the list of things involved: python, C#, Go, Zookeeper, Kafka, Mongo and Postgres databases but also more specialized dbs for time series data and logs, replication, zero-downtime restarts, version control, git, Gerrit, managing jobs sent to compute clouds, and so on.

When I joined Broadcom, I was writing embedded firmware and applications in C for large routers. Here, "large" means the kind that power the biggest cloud-based data centers in the world, transport terabits per second, and make timing guarantees measured in nanoseconds. I eventually joined the software architecture group before moving into the tools team (above).
