I believe that learning not only changes how we see the world, but also empowers us to change it for the better. Over the past 25 years, I’ve had the good fortune to learn and to work with the best in their fields on meaningful problems, in challenging environments, with diverse points of view. I am an Economist and Investment Strategist who uses economic reasoning and empirical analysis to create and share insights that I can apply to solve people’s investment problems and navigate complex market and economic conditions.This pursuit of new insights and challenges has been the constant across the transitions in my career and the reason for them. Earning a PhD in Economics at the University of Chicago, I wrote my dissertation under Nobel laureates Bob Lucas and Gary Becker. Mr. Becker taught me how to ask the right questions to clarify a problem and its solution, and the power of economic reasoning to help answer the large and small questions of everyday life while working with him on his Business Week column. At Goldman Sachs I worked in commodities research as crude oil prices went from $20/bbl to $145/bbl. I loved the challenge of working with my team, traders, and clients, to create insights in real-time into why and how the market was changing, and to manage risk and navigate market conditions that we had never experienced.After 11 years at Goldman, I seized the chance to learn from and work with another group of the best, joining Bridgewater Associates as a Portfolio Strategist. I was intrigued by Ray Dalio’s insights into the Financial Crisis, and it was a great opportunity to learn Ray’s approach to the economy and investing. I also learned about what I need to be my best. The opportunity and access it gave came with a 3-year non-compete. Being barred from investing roles afforded me time to redirect my curiosity to other interests: wrapping up old research projects and starting new ones, connecting with colleagues, spending time with my children, and honing my woodshop skills (I can now build surprisingly good school theater sets).With my non-compete done, I’ve returned to professional investing and research as Principal of Global Purview LLC and Chief Economist at Abaxx Technologies.
