Hello, I’m David Harwell, CEO of Consulting Science LLC. Prior to starting an independent consulting practice, I worked for two of the largest professional, scientific organizations in the world: the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the American Geophysical Union (AGU). I have a demonstrated history of success within these organizations delivering innovative programs to exceed expectations within complex, technical, politically-charged systems. I conceptualized and launched new programs that increased the value of association membership and generated loyalty, retention, volunteerism, and member satisfaction. Further, I have sound strategic planning, execution, communication, organizational, budgeting, program management, and people management skills. My experience coupled with a strong educational background allows me to bring an original, innovative and progressive approach to an organization. Specifically, my business and technical skills allow me to transform organizations into those that remain relevant in an ever-changing world.I believe in a leadership style that utilizes a combination of teamwork, listening, coaching, training, and mentoring. I attribute my success-to-date to my ability to be a strong team leader who is solutions-focused, customer oriented and results driven. Networking can be mutually beneficial. Please feel free to contact me at drharwell@consultingscience.net to discuss my background, business skill set, potential consulting engagements and subjects of common interest.

Director, Talent PoolAmerican Geophysical Union May 2016 - May 2019Washington, Dc, UsAs Director of Talent Pool Programs for American Geophysical Union (AGU) I lead the development and implementation of an organizational strategic plan for talent pool initiatives. My staff and I create new initiatives to enhance affiliation and engagement of AGU’s over 60K members and 300K+ Earth and space scientists and students worldwide. I set priorities for initiatives and implement operational efficiencies to streamline and target program offerings. I also work to align technology to best meet AGU's mission and needs. My trained staff effectively manages the career and professional development needs of our highly diverse geoscience workforce/membership. I also manage the resource allocation of the staff. Key to my work is developing and maintaining relationships with collaborators, sponsors, and external stakeholders. Some of my major accomplishments at AGU have centered around cultivating and developing multiple collaborative partners for innovative programs to serve the changing needs of our membership including: Mentoring365.org, expanding the student travel grants, creating an undergraduate scholarship program for URM students, and expanding the Inclusive Graduate Education Network to include Earth and space science programs. -
Assistant Director, Industry Member ProgramsAmerican Chemical Society Feb 2014 - May 2016Washington, District Of Columbia, UsWhen I became the Assistant Director of Industry Member Programs for ACS I conducted an initial evaluation and deep dive analysis of ACS's program offerings. I collaborated with other senior managers (primarily from market research and representative governance) to eliminate ineffective legacy programs, identify gaps, and recommend new programs. I led efforts to increase value and relevance derived from ACS membership by focusing on the creation of industry-specific content and services in response to market research to exceed member needs. I also developed value statements for market sectors, and prioritized strategies for industry member retention and acquisition. Some of my major accomplishments in this role were:★ I created industry-specific services and publications to serve as vehicles for increased membership and retention to include: the Industry Voices Blog, a revamped Industry Insights Newsletter, and new website (which also increased financial support of ACS awards and governance support for industry).★ I enhanced relationships with donors and improved business practices resulting in significant increase in dues revenues in 2015 versus 2014. This allowed ACS to increase funding for two programs (Industry Roundtables and the Committee on Corporation Associates) by 250%. -
Assistant Director, Career Management & DevelopmentAmerican Chemical Society Oct 2006 - Feb 2014Washington, District Of Columbia, UsAs the Assistant Director of ACS’s Career Management & Development Department I held responsibility for cultivating and enhancing professional services through active program management. Significant new career programs added during my tenure included: ACS Career Pathways workshop (highlighting different career choices for chemical professionals), entrepreneurial programs/initiatives, an entrepreneurial resource center, and successful government grant awards that furthered ACS career and development initiatives (i.e. Women of Color in Chemistry, WIRED training: One Stop Career Centers in NJ). I also facilitated 10-15 career development workshops annually, and made presentations to executive management, ACS Board, ACS committees, and to the public. My major accomplishments in this role were:★ In 2014 Career and Professional Services were ranked as the #1 reason why members renewed their ACS membership. In 2008 these services were not even in the top 10 reasons for renewal.I received three major ACS awards:★ 2013 ACS Catalyst Award: I was recognized for my efforts as a member of the Development & Implementation team for ACS on Campus, a global outreach program to university students promoting ACS’s career/professional development offerings.★ 2012 ASAE Summit Award: I created the ACS Entrepreneurial Initiative, a training and support program for entrepreneurs and start-ups in chemistry.★ 2009 Outstanding Service Award: I supported the development and implementation activities of the new ACS Leadership Development System. -
