About David Hawk

I argue with human idiots but since I'm a human I am thereby an idiot as well. Thus, I'm most upset with me and my development of crap. Seen as a good teacher, an idiot dean, and a helpful advisor to many CEOs, I now farm to see if we can do better managing climate change. Mostly we can't. Each year drought expands. Our animals are unhappy with us. Trees can teach us much about life, thus we remove them. Were we always this way, or did we become dumber via Aristotle, Newton, Darwin, Trump, et.al.? Using unaided-rationality and vacuous logic we fight a war against nature. Dumb? Hawk's 1975-77 research project into climate change, with 20 companies and 6 governments, found fault in man's peculiar model of the industrial, as it generated environmental deterioration from the outset. It ends in climate change consequences for life on earth. Pity? Hawk's Wharton School PhD was republished 40 years later as: "Too Early, Too Late, Now what?" Republished in 2022 as "Sorry, Humans are Fucked!" it was banned from Amazon Books. His book, "Short-term Gain, Long-term Pain," focuses on the "Now what?" concern. It examines negative entropy as intellectual marketing of human mistakes. Sad. Entropy is real. 1) Revere natural beauty. 2) Dump ideas of leadership, strategy, hierarchies, etc., except for their humor. 3) Avoid limitations built into the foundation of Harvard, etc. a. Avoid Strategy, seek truth via transparency. b. Avoid 0-D as pointless, 1-D as political, and 2-D as visually limiting. c. Watch humans fuck-up 3D while on 1-D immortality trips from anger over 4-D. 5-D is hope. d. Alternatives come from the work of Einstein and Hawking. This may be too little too late, but seems like a last best chance to reverse the manly war on nature.     Dropped a BCG/Harvard offer to teach in Newark, NJ at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. Students with limited access to financial resources and few "connections" became my passion. Institute leadership, in search of a direction, became my humor. They took too long to fire me. I was threatened with unknown criminal charges if I refused to accept their professor emeritus package? I preferred five years in court where some companies I advised paid the cost, to learn about New Jersey law. Based on my resume, website and fund raising, a newly appointed provost mistakenly asked me to be an acting dean for a year. To do so I turned down a leadership research position in Beijing. As "acting like a dean," I attracting considerable new funding, brought in a prestigious Board, expanded the EMBA, rebuilt the facilities and kept AACSB accreditation. The probationary accreditation turned into the award for the most improved AACSB school that year. The EMBA was expanded 300% and was then slated to double enrollment the next year. One hour after receiving the accreditation letter the president fired me. He thought the school should be for undergraduate athletes that don't graduate anyway. This was in the tradition of Trump University leadership where Altenkirch, Christie and Bloom wanted loyalty, not progress. China then cancelled a high profile venture with NJIT where 25 Chinese business leaders would come and take 4 NJIT-Wharton taught courses. This was between Tsinghua University and NJIT. Tsinghua is the world's leading AI and CIS Schools. They took their NJIT agreement to Harvard. NJIT students thus lost many opportunities for the future.

Carried out studies demonstrating how and why NJIT students were some of the most desirable employees in the world in that they arose from tough backgrounds, were frequently treated badly by their chosen university via cost too high, leaders not leading, professors not professing, yet could continue with humor and passion, i.e., they had been there and were not deterred by the trivia of corporate life. I was humbled by their enthusiasm for life and living.

Tsinghua's program is of very high quality with the timely research issues, coupled to the best of the best students and faculty. US needs a similar program. Kennedy at Harvard should be as good, and maybe one day will become so.

    Helped create IIB with two friends, Dr. Gunnar Hedlund, and Dr. Lars Otterbeck. It was an international business research group for PhD students working with major international firms. Initiated the research part of IIB with a project on the role of business in creating environmental deterioration globally, and what the private and public sectors could jointly do to manage it. Project was titled: "Environmental Deterioration: Analytic Solutions in Search of Synthetic Problems." 1975-1977. Sweden's Prime Minister presented the results to OECD in Paris. The three volume final research reporting included work from Exxon's Chief Scientist on the emergence of "climate change" from human activities. The conclusion was that governmental regulation would not be capable of managing the emerging crisis for systems of life.

Established new graduate programs, sources of external funding, research funding, external lectures program and international student recruitment. Also help encourage some professors to retire and think about their accomplishments. Was chair of a committee to establish a new business school. I proposed a school emphasizing business as unusual, thus being a leader for the next century. The University president was thinking more in line with what he called "An Average Iowa Type School." I submitted a report to him on "How to have the most mediocre business school in America." He fired me. So sad, no humor there....ha..ha.. May he rest in peaceful mediocrity. ISU had great students. Liked them, much. Carried out and completed research into why Colleges of Design should not leave Colleges of Engineering, yet have more autonomy. No one paid attention, of course. It was demonstrated that students needed the offerings of both schools. Project was funded by the National Endowment for the Arts. Most US Departments of Architecture did end up leaving their former homes in Engineering. Architecture moved away from technology. Engineering moved away from design.
