About David L. Hoffman

I create value for my clients by listening to their challenges, understanding their business, providing pragmatic solutions, and persistently driving results. Clients count on me to deliver solutions to complex challenges. Some recent successes include:○ Project Manager of the 1st and 2nd successfully constructed horizontal dewatering well (a/k/a Dewatering Well Placement) in Australia for a large open pit mine. The 1st horizontal dewatering well (930m MD / 93m TVD) was completed with a 420 kW (563 Hp) electronic submersible pump and yielded >250 litres per second (4,000 gallons per minute). DWP is the next generation of mine dewatering solution that combines mine hydrogeology, horizontal directional drilling, oilfield technology, civil construction, and water well construction expertise;○ Project Manager of design and construction of two seawater intakes for the University of Queensland Heron Island Research Station (HIRS) located on the Great Barrier Reef. Two x 250mm diameter HDPE pipelines were horizontal directionally drilled 520m beneath a coral reef from the island to a subsea exit point. Intake screens were anchored to the seabed and connected to the pipeline. The new intakes supply seawater to HIRS for use in research laboratories, aquaria, fire protection, and future raw water for reverse osmosis treatment;○ Identified as the top consultancy (out of twenty total) working on the Healthy HeadWaters Coal Seam Gas Water Feasibility Study in Queensland, Australia, for timely and quality deliverables. My role was Project Manager;○ Successfully delivered a best-in-class technology, deep (800 m), multilevel groundwater monitoring completion (tubing, wireline tool & packer system) to a coal seam gas operator (the first installation in Australia). Value includes a total lower cost of ownership (7 deep aquifers monitored in a single 800 m well), ease of use (rigless operation) and verifiable/defensible groundwater data. My role was sales, project / technical management; and,○ Identified, tested, proved and obtained government approvals to consume groundwater from aquifers considered complex, unviable or overlooked by others. My work as Project Manager included well design and construction, aquifer testing, analyses and government permitting. My background includes 25+ years of international experience on groundwater resource projects in Australia, British Virgin Islands, Bahamas and the United States (California, Florida, New York and others).

Design And Engineering Manager / Hydrogeologist
    Dunstans Apr 2018 - Present
Brisbane, Queensland & Pilbara Operations In Western Australia
Project Manager of the design and construction of horizontal dewatering wells (a/k/a Dewatering Well Placement [DWP]) in Australia. Responsibilities include technical design, construction, personnel (20 FIFO crew members + 7 subcontractors), contracting, scheduling, logistics, reporting and HSE compliance. DWP offers some unique benefits including:○ Ability to directionally steer the drillhead to purposely intersect target (permeable) hydrogeological zones thus enhancing hydraulic contact resulting in increased well yield (a significant hydrogeological advantage over conventional dewatering approaches);○ Reduction of interference to the mining operation (elimination of in-pit operations, access corridors, power supply & water pipelines), reduction of in-pit HSE risk to workers (no in-pit work required) and improvement of mine pit traffic movement due to removal of conventional dewatering infrastructure (thus an increase in mining efficiency); and,○ Improved run time (typically >95%) of the electronic submersible pump coupled with higher yield (up to 300 L/s) resulting in a more efficient mine dewatering operation (versus conventional vertical in-pit wells that are typically have lower yield and are frequently blasted, cut or lost).
