David Irwin designs residential & civic worlds that bring metaphysical principles to life in compelling, revealing and incisive ways and do so without creative compromise.Currently our studio is building and acquiring land for two key projects:Project No. 21 and Project No. 30; both located in Joshua Tree, California.Respectively, the projects pull spatial symbolism from the Old Testament of the Bible and from the Hermetic text, The Kabbalion.David gained his Bachelors in Architecture with honors at Pratt Institute under the professorial lineage of the late New York architect and artist John Heyduk.He’s influenced by a nearly lifelong meditation practice passed on by his mother, and the spiritual influence of his grandmother, a third order Dominican Nun.Before founding his own studio, Irwin was a studio assistant to the late architect and artist Lebbeus Woods.His work draws from European architectural traditions, while also taking inspiration from French artist Jean Giraud, Chilean filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, and Spanish architect Enric Miralles.Awards & Exhibits:-10 perspectival hand drawings were shown at American Institute of Architects’ San Francisco Chapter in 2018 and 2019 (project 0),-prototype for a mobile research lab was shown by invitation at The Explorer’s Club main club house in Manhattan (project 6)-North America’s leading platform for contemporary furnishing design, the International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) featured work made by David in both a group project 2010 (project 5) and a solo piece of furniture in 2011 (project 16)-invited to develop the concept design for IONS-Earthrise Retreat Center (project 8) located in Petaluma, California. We proposed a new campus masterplan along with a series of buildings for the 194-acre, $20 million dollar campus renovation. The design was based on the archetypical tradition that is the tarot of Marseilles.-Norman Rosenfeld travel grant for outstanding thesis project from Pratt Institute’s School of Architecture where he graduated magna cum laude with honors, designing a scalable climate research center in western Greenland.
