I've had the distinct honor of serving as a public policy advisor to San Diego's Mayor & City Council, on issues related to the elderly in "America's Finest City."

I am proud to have served on the Board of Directors for The George G. Glenner Alzheimer's Family Centers (creator of Town Square), a non-profit provider of day programs in a family-like setting for adults affected by Alzheimer’s Disease and other forms of memory impairment, as well as support services for people who care for those with memory impairment.I was elected Chair of the Board of Directors in April 2014. As Board Chair, I helped lead the team that designed and constructed the world-renowned Town Square Chula Vista, a ground-breaking program inside a "mini 1950's-style town" that provides engaging activities for people with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. We successfully conducted a multi-million dollar capital campaign, and I helped forge a national strategic alliance that has resulted in more than 15 Town Square locations being constructed around the United States. As a Board member, I also provided direction in areas related to budgeting and finance, fundraising and donor cultivation, branding, community outreach, community partnerships, and governance of the organization.

ACCION San Diego creates increased income and access to jobs for low-to-moderate income, self-employed people by providing small loans and business support services. Our organization has loaned over $15 million to local entrepreneurs.The organization's client base reflects our community's rich diversity; approximately 68% of ACCION San Diego borrowers identify as part of an ethnic minority group, and 42% of our clients are women. Since the beginning of 2007, I was involved with the Technical Assistance Program, which provides volunteers who are available on an on-call basis to assist clients with technical aspects of running their businesses, from basic accounting to website design. In my capacity as a Board member, I chaired the Technical Assistance Committee, which recruits and works with volunteers who have technical skills (such as accounting, QuickBooks, and web site design) and the ability to mentor the organization's clients. I also served as a member of the Governance Committee.

The purpose of the Mission Hills Business Improvement District (BID) is to enhance the growth and improvement of Mission Hills businesses, create partnerships between business and property owners that promote economic revitalization in the community, and to administer business and property owner assessment districts under contract with the City of San Diego. As Treasurer of the board of directors, I also served on the Executive Committee. I chaired the Bylaws Committee, was chair of the Economic Development Committee, and was Vice Chair of the Board.In 2012, and again in 2013, the San Diego City Council awarded me a commendation to recognize my commitment to improving the quality of life in San Diego.Among the accomplishments of the BID during my tenure are: * Creation of a weekly Farmers Market, which makes fresh, locally-grown produce available to residents. * Removal of parking meters from sidewalks, to make the area more accessible to pedestrians, and people with wheelchairs & walkers. * Approval from the San Diego City Council for creation of a monument and ADA-compliant crosswalk, to make the gateway into Mission Hills more beautiful and accessible to handicapped and elderly people. * Creation of street fairs and community activities, which have been widely attended and have contributed to a greater sense of community in Mission Hills.

Nominated by the former Mayor of San Diego Jerry Sanders, and confirmed by the San Diego City Council, to serve in an advisory capacity to the Mayor and City Council. My responsibilities included: * Advising the Mayor and City Council on policy and issues relating to transportation, security at home, improved intergenerational interaction, meal delivery, housing, improved City-County cooperation, and other issues. * Making recommendations for improving communications between seniors and City government. * Reviewing City employment policies for seniors. * Advising on relevant issues and formation of laws, policies, or procedures which may affect seniors. * Reporting annually to the Mayor and Council on the “State of the Seniors” within the City of San Diego.

The Uptown Community Parking District is chartered with enhancing and revitalizing the public, commercial, and residential areas of the Uptown area of San Diego. The organization coordinates, manages, and resolves parking and traffic issues within the district - enhancing the quality of life in the neighborhoods that make up the area. The organization helps administer a pipeline of more than $5 million in public projects, under contract with the City of San Diego.As a member of the Board of Directors of the Mission Hills Business Improvement District, I represented the Mission Hills community on the Uptown Community Parking District's Board. As a Board member of the UCPD, I chaired the Bylaws Committee.

SCRC has been providing services to caregivers in San Diego and Imperial County since 1987. They are a private, independent non-profit agency and most services are free of charge. Anyone living in San Diego or Imperial County caring for an adult with a cognitive impairing condition that occurred after the age of 18, or someone age 60 years or older in need of assistance with activities of daily living, is eligible for services.As a board member, I co-chaired the Marketing Committee, which generates increased awareness of the organization's services and its impact on the community, among potential clients, centers of influence and supporters.
