Since the start of the pandemic in March 2020, I worked as a senior news editor for CNN Digital during a relentless news cycle. I ran coverage of coronavirus as it gripped New York City and then pivoted to focus primarily on policing in America after the death of George Floyd. My team has worked multiple high-profile police shootings, grinding out daily coverage and generating enterprise stories – during a period of time when CNN Digital saw a larger global audience than any other news platform in the world.Previously, for more than a decade I led a team of editors and reporters in a rigorous news environment, producing and updating breaking stories for Newsday.com in real time.I spearheaded online coverage of superstorm Sandy and its aftermath; the Gilgo Beach serial killings; the rise and fall of corrupt politicians and law enforcement brass; the toll on the local community and national fallout from the MS-13 street gang's violence; and the emotional funerals of fallen police officers and firefighters. On a lighter note, I handled coyote sightings, shark sightings and celebrity sightings.Every newsroom has its own collection of personalities and talents, and I've learned through the years that readers are ultimately served best when those staffers are empowered to tap into their strengths and interests as often as possible. I embrace collaboration in the newsroom, understanding that we do our best work when we row the boat together. Underserved communities have always been top of mind as well, and two decades ago I conceived and supervised production of a five-day bilingual print series on the challenges facing the Latino community in Stamford, Connecticut. And then in nearby Greenwich, I was running the newsroom on the night of Sept. 11 when my team produced a historic paper in a community that ultimately lost 10 people. It was there too that, on a more personal and self-enlightening front, I wrote a column about being a first-time father.Reporter. Columnist. Assigning editor. Sports editor. News editor. Copy editor. Breaking news editor. When it comes to the newsroom, to quote Bruce Springsteen, "I've been around a time or two."
