After graduating from Annapolis in 1983, I served seven years in the U.S. Navy, with sea duty on the nuclear-powered, ballistic missile submarine, the USS Lafayette, SSBN 616B, earning two Navy Achievement Medals, followed by being the first submarine officer ever assigned to SWOS in Newport, RI. Following my naval service, I obtained an MBA in Finance from the University of Texas at Austin in 1992. I then became a Sell-Side Equity Research Analyst, following tech stocks during the tech/fiber optics/internet/dot.com stock market mania of the late 1990s. I was selected by the Wall Street Journal and Reuters as one of the top U.S. Equity Analysts for the Telecom/Tech Hardware Sector in 1999, even though I was one of the very rare tech analysts who had profitable short recommendations during the era of "irrational exuberance". In 2000, I moved to the Buy Side, where I was an Equity Research Analyst and later Assistant Portfolio Manager at a Palo Alto, CA based, technology-focused Hedge Fund. The fund significantly outperformed the S&P 500 by a wide margin in both 2008 (a down year for the S&P) and 2009 (an up year for the S&P). I am currently working at a high-tech medical device start-up with the vision of democratizing medical diagnostics for the consumer by creating affordable, easy-to-use and accurate at-home (or POC) diagnostic test kits. In my free time on the weekends, I try to keep up with my two son's extracurricular activities (skiing and surfing) and learn more about the exciting developments in biotechnology.
