I worked at EcoAct as a Senior Consultant and the Sustainability Service Line Lead at EcoAct Northern Europe (London-based) for almost 3 years leading on the oversight and development of several key services such as Sustainability and Net Zero strategy development, CDP, Science-Based Targets, TCFD & climate scenario analysis, Scope 3 footprinting, water and other service offerings within my service line. Throughout my time at EcoAct I was also responsible for managing a significant number of important clients and key accounts along with our own internal project teams (and line reports and mentoring duties). Such clients included Virgin Atlantic, JTi, Halma, Estée Lauder Companies, Euronav, Huel, Compass Group, Allied Irish Bank, CRH, ManpowerGroup, and many others.

I took the opportunity to spend some time back home and do some travelling in Eastern Europe during my first break from employment in over seven years. A refreshing change of pace for a few months away from the working world.

I dedicated time to acting as a Volunteer Caseworker for Victim Support having completed significant training for this role beforehand. The role includes providing counseling and emotional support as well as practical advice for victims of crime in London. Another important feature of the role is acting as an advocate for victims by liaising and negotiating with key stakeholders such as councils, housing associations and the Metropolitan Police. Key attributes required for this role include strong interpersonal and negotiation skills, discipline, compassion, and common sense.

I interned with ClearlySo, a company that provides a platform for social businesses and enterprises (SBEs) and organisations in the Third Sector to network, seek investment, find suppliers and learn about how best to grow their activities and income. In this position I spent time researching and profiling SBEs, managing the ClearlySo Jobs Board and contributing my sustainability knowledge to the office and organisation. Other key tasks included client management and correspondence, research projects, writing content for reports/plans and events preparation.Interning at ClearlySo was a good opportunity to work for the first time in the social enterprise / Third Sector environment with an informed, supportive team adding to my knowledge base and contacts in a area which strongly crosses over with the sustainability sector.

This temporary role at NHK was to research and summarise key witness testimonies of individuals such as Ministers, Cabinet Office staff, the Prime Minister and key staff in the Armed Forces and security services at the Chilcott Iraq Inquiry. This work assisted NHK in creating a documentary on the use of war inquiries in the UK and how this system could be applied to Japan. NHK is the largest broadcaster in Japan and it operates in a similar capacity to the way the BBC does in the UK.

Monash University is a member of the prestigious Australian Group of Eight universities (www.go8.edu.au). I thoroughly enjoyed my studies took away a solid understanding and knowledge of a broad range of key sustainability issues and concepts and how they apply to the corporate world. Courses undertaken at Monash included Corporate Responsibility Strategy, Climate Change Science, Sustainability Measurement, ESG Reporting, Environmental Principles and Ethics, Environmental Law, Environmental Analysis, Environmental Management Systems, Ecology, International Development. As part of my studies I also undertook a challenging internship with the Sustainability and Planning Unit at the City of Melbourne Council.The project required analysis of Council's GHG emissions reporting strategy and supporting systems at that time and their obligations to various national and international GHG emissions reporting programs. I was awarded a High Distinction (First) for this dissertation project.

Temporary role for Victorian state govt’s CarbonDown program (within VECCI) assessing the carbon-preparedness of selected companies within the ASX200. I directly communicated with companies and conducted proactive desktop research and analysis to form suitable partnerships with a view to providing funding and expertise for promising carbon reduction projects. I was also responsible for commissioning further external carbon data research and analysis by external consultancy firms.The project further developed my research and inter-personal skills as well as my carbon-related knowledge base. It also provided me with useful experience in building trusting relationships between CarbonDown and essential stakeholders.

The Grow Me The Money program is a joint EPA Victoria / Victorian Employers Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VECCI) initiative that aims to encourage and enable small to medium sized businesses and companies (SMEs) in Victoria to become environmentally sustainable by providing technical and logistical support, providing accreditation, facilitating relationships and promoting SME’s achievements to public and peers. This is partly accomplished by GMTM’s multiple step system that members progress through with technical assistance such as measuring environmental KPI’s and creating action plans. The role greatly assisted in developing my client management skills and enhancing my understanding and experience of the various interests and stakeholders influencing business and the sustainability challenges faced by commerce and industry. It also gave me valuable experience in handling multiple tasks within a single position and managing my time effectively.Duties included program development; client management (responsible for and assisted a large number of client members personally assigned to me with their progress through the GMTM program); database management; website admin; web forum, etc.

3 month secondment (from Grow Me The Money program @ VECCI) to the Environmental Protection Authority - Victoria (EPA Victoria) as a member of their Business Sustainability Unit. I worked with a team on developing funding projects for the Prescribed Industrial Waste (Contaminated Soils) industry as part of EPA's HazWaste Fund initiative. Duties included 'Contaminated Soils' general project development through tasks such as risk analyses, desktop research, client dialogue, site visits, document drafting, etc.In this role I gained further experience of working within the public sector exposing me to the unique political and economic demands of this work setting as well as improving my creative thinking and my negotiation and problem solving skills.

I undertook an internship with the City of Melbourne Council as an integral part of my Monash University dissertation and authored a climate change report on behalf of the Council. I received a High Distinction (First) from Monash for this dissertation project. The project required analysis of Council's emissions reporting systems and strategies at that time and their obligations to the various emissions reporting programs that they were then a party to such as Cities for Climate Protection, the Chicago Climate Exchange, Greenhouse Challenge Plus and the National Greenhouse and Energy Reporting System. The project required dedication and in-depth research, analytical and relationship-building skills. I ultimately authored and delivered a 14,000 word report discussing Council's situation and proposed future policy and actions. Working in this unit at the Council was a fantastic experience as it was a dynamic and exciting workplace with committed staff always willing to provide support and advice during my time there.

Participated in the highly competitive Japanese Exchange and Teaching Programme run by the Japanese government. My school was Fushiki Senior High School in Toyama Prefecture and I loved every second of my time there.I gained strong creative, teaching, presentation, leadership and interpersonal skills as well as developing cross-cultural understanding and transferable communication and cooperation skills working in a completely new cultural and working environment. I also developed conversational Japanese linguistic skills from scratch and passed the Japan Langauge Proficiency Test at Level 3 (Conversational).I led and assisted various English classes and university exam tutorials; constructed lessons and exams; graded students; developed the regional English curriculum; delivered presentations to various audiences e.g. dynamic training workshops for junior colleagues, special topic presentations, etc. I organised and conducted frequent English camps and created and broadcasted daily English language radio shows with students and teachers at Fushiki SHS. I was also elected as the Takaoka Regional Representative for over 40 JET colleagues. In this role I helped solve personal and professional problems of others and delivered advice and encouragement to fellow JETs.
